Typesetting: Macmillan India Ltd, Bangalore-25; India 32/3145/SPS-54 3 2 1 0 Printed on acid-free paper Preface This volume contains the Proceedings from the 3rd Annual Conference of the European Association of Petroleum Geoscientists and Engineers held in the Fortezza da Basso, Florence, from 26 to 30 May 1991. The conference took place in parallel with the 53rd Meeting of the European Association of Exploration Geophysicists and altogether there were 3377 attendees at both. The volume contains papers from the EAPG programme, which consisted of 62 lectures and 63 poster presentations. The 30 articles included here come from 15 of the petroleum bearing basins of Europe, from Norway to Italy and Ireland to Russia. A map showing their locations is included inside the front cover of the volume. The authors discuss the genesis of the petroleum in the basins, via their source rocks, the maturity evolution, the nature and origin of the oil and gas fields and their reservoir description. Three articles discuss petroleum geoscience topics. Five other articles from the conference were published in the journal First Break in 1992. The Association gratefully acknowledges the assistance provided to the editorial com mittee by the technical referees: E. Brosse, P. Dailly, R. Dixon, S. Ehrenberg, A. 1. Fraser, K. Geil, K. W. Glennie, G. P. Hamar, C. Hermanrud, M. Hovland, A. Hurst, H. Irwin, L. N. Jensen, R. Johansen, B. T. Larsen, G. G. Leckie, T. Meyer, N. Milton, R. Mj(Js, M. Partington, R. M. Pegrum, A. Price, A. Prinzhofer and A. N. Read. Reference to a paper in this volume should be made in the following style: Curi F (1993) Oil generation and accumulation in the Albanide Ionian Basin. In: Spencer A M (ed) Generation, accumulation and production of Europe's hydrocarbons III, Special publication of the European Association of Petroleum Geoscientists. No.3, Springer, Berlin Heidelberg New York, pp. 281-293. This third special publication of EAPG follows the format and content of the first two: Spencer A M (ed) (1991) Generation, accumulation and production of Europe's hydro carbons, Special publication of the European Association of Petroleum Geoscientists, No. 1. Oxford University Press, Oxford. Spencer AM (ed) (1992) Generation, accumulation and production of Europe's hydrocarbons II, Special publication of the European Association of Petroleum Geoscientists, No.2. Springer, Berlin Heidelberg New York. These first three special publications together contain a total of 87 articles on petroleum geoscience from the basins of Europe. These articles come from some 35 of the petroleum bearing basins. Taken together they provide the fullest account of the petroleum geoscience of these basins which has so far been published. A map showing the locations of all of these articles is included here inside the back cover of the volume. Stavanger, Norway Anthony M. Spencer May 1993 The European Association of Petroleum Geoscientists and Engineers The Association serves professionals involved in geophysics, geochemistry, exploration and production geology, petrophysics and reservoir engineering. EAPG is unique in its multidis ciplinary character and because, as a European organization, it aims to bring together professionals from Eastern, Central and Western Europe. It was launched at its first conference in May 1989 in West Berlin and has since grown to a membership of about 1000. Meetings EAPG has successfully organized Annual Conferences, simultaneously with EAEG, in Berlin, Copenhagen, Florence and Paris. More than 4500 delegates attended the Paris Conference and one in four came in order to attend the EAPG Technical Programme. Future Annual COIiferences are planned for Stavanger in 1993, Vienna in 1994, Glasgow in 1995, Amsterdam in 1996 and Geneva in 1997. Workshops, courses and specialized conferences are organized as well, sometimes jointly with EAEG, AAPG or SPE, and often in combination with the Annual Conference. The biannual European Symposium on Improved Oil Recovery is now under the auspices of EAPG. First held in 1981, this symposium attracted an attendance of almost 500 by 1991 and will next be held in Moscow in October 1993. Publications EAPG publishes, jointly with EAEG, the monthly journal First Break, containing short articles and news items. The Special Publications volumes are now published for the Association by Springer-Verlag. The first four Special Publications contain papers from the Annual Conferences. There is an annual Yearbook with membership information. EAPG members enjoy substantially reduced prices on these and other petroleum geoscience books and journals. European activities EAPG has always stood for good lines of communication with petroleum geoscientists in all European oil and gas producing countries. This has resulted in formal affiliations with a large number of geoscientific societies in the region, as well as a network of national correspon dents. Jointly with EAEG a new organization, the PACE Foundation, has been set up to intensify contacts with, and provide support to, geoscientists in Central and Eastern Europe. The European Commission has shown an interest in cooperating with EAPG and its Annual Conference. The Conference provides an overview of European petroleum geoscience research and also serves as a forum for the presentation of Community-supported research. The European Commission provides financial support for participants from Central and Eastern Europe. Membership Over 16000 petroleum geoscientists and engineers are professionally active in the European countries with the petroleum industry. EAPG will need the support of these professionals in order to grow and better serve our industry. Membership is open to all professionals with in the disciplines listed above and may be obtained by writing to: The Secretary-Treasurer, EAPG, P.O.
