General Index An attempt has been made to index all persons, corporate bodies, places and subjects mentioned in the text of the Guide. While the index is therefore comprehensive (if not exhaustive) in this respect, researchers are advised that this is not an index to the entire holdings of the Library. Absence from the index does not necessarily imply that a person, place or subject is not represented in the Library's holdings. Personal, corporate and place names have been constructed in accordance with the National Council on Archives Rules for the Construction of Personal, Place and Corporate Names (1997). Dates of birth and death and additional qualifiers are largely derived from the Dictionary of National Biography, as well as Who's Who, Who Was Who, and other standard reference sources. Sovereigns and members of royal families are indexed under their forenames. Titled persons are indexed under their family name, with a cross reference from the title. Popes are indexed under their papal names. Compound surnames, whether hyphenated or not, are indexed under their final elements. This accords with the practice adopted in the New Dictionary of National Biography, and in the NCA Rules. Ordnance Survey National Grid references are given for places within the United Kingdom. Specific places overseas are identified by co-ordinates of latitude and longitude, to the nearest five minutes. The forms of place-names which were contemporary with the original sources have generally been preferred to present-day forms; thus Southern Rhodesia, not Zimbabwe. Library of Congress Subject Headings, 21st edition (1998), has been used as the basis for the construction of subject index entries, with modifications to take account of local conditions and the primary nature of the materials. Cross references are used extensively to guide the reader from general terms to the more specific, and to navigate between related subjects. Word-order alphabetization has been used, in this order of predecence: commas, spaces, hyphens, alphanumeric characters. The prefixes Sir, Dame etc. have been ignored in alphabetizing personal names. Thus the order of entries will be: Black, Joseph; Black Papers; Black-letter, Blackburn. Abbey, Edwin Austin (1852-1911), Abraham, E.
