The Journal publishes articles concerning research techniques and procedures, descriptions of genealogical collections and records, items of genealogical emphasis throughout the world, genealogical publication and reporting, professionalism, and book reviews. Articles on beginning genealogy, scholarly articles, brief articles and comprehensive treatments are requested. Genealogies and examples of problem solving are accepted if they are well documented, emphasize effective research procedures and evaluation of evidence, explain a unique research technique, or describe the sources used in the compilation. Genealogies of families with Utah connections or families west of the Mississippi are preferred, but consideration will be given other families at the editor’s discretion. Articles concerning the history and philosophy of genealogy will be considered, but they must give interesting and new information, not just opinion, and they must be documented. Copies of source records will be published under certain circumstances. Emphasis will be given to source records from Utah and the Intermountain West. Examples are: newspaper extracts, tombstone inscriptions from isolated cemeteries, Bible or family records in private possession. A description and history of the record should precede the extract. The editor reserves the right to accept, conditionally accept, subject to recommended revision, or reject any article submitted for publication. Prior publication of an article or concurrent submission will usually preclude publication in the Journal. Manuscripts should be typewritten, double-spaced on white paper with generous margins, typed on only one side of the paper. Manuscripts of varying length will be considered; longer articles may be serialized at the editor’s discretion. The title of the article and the name, credentials and complete mailing address of each author should appear on the first page. Manuscript pages should be numbered consecutively. All sentences, phrases and words in a foreign language should be followed by an English translation in brackets, unless of obvious interpretation. Articles should generally be written in third-person style. In all cases, articles should be properly documented with end notes and, if appropriate, a bibliography. Include a biography of 75-100 words. When possible, in addition to the typewritten manuscript, two copies of the manuscript should be submitted on an MS-DOS compatible diskette (any size or density), one file in the author’s word-processor format and the other in ASCII format. The editor reserves the right to make routine changes in punctuation and grammar in articles accepted for publication. The author will be consulted if substantial changes are necessary. The recommended guide to preparing manuscripts, footnotes and bibliographies is The Chicago Manual of Style, thirteenth edition, revised and expanded (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1982). Recent articles in the Journal should be consulted for Journal style. Authors desiring to have individual articles copyrighted in their names should indicate their intention to do so when the manuscript is submitted to the editor. The original manuscript accepted for publication will be retained by the editor; the author should retain a copy. Authors will receive two complimentary copies of the issue in which the author’s article appears.
