It is no exaggeration to state that Reinhard Gehlen is perhaps as responsible as any man living for shaping the dramatic and often clandestine events of the Cold War, for he has had a hand in almost every international intrigue over the past twenty five years. At the beginning of World War II he was an ob scure officer in the Wehrmacht. By its end he had risen to become one of Hitler's chief intelligence officers, in sole charge of espionage and counter espionage against the Soviet Union. Then, in 1945, he brought off his gr·eatest coup, placing at the dis posal of the United States his unrivaled experience and unique archives covering every aspect of the Soviet Union and her satellites. In return, the CIA placed him in charge of the "Gehlen Organization." His headquarters was an impenetrable "fortress" at Pullach in Bavaria-re portedly financed at $200,000,000-and it soon grew to be the most powerful and best-equipped espio nage establishment in Western Europe. Eventually his organization became the official Secret Service of the West German state. More than a fascinatingly detailed biography of a unique and significant man, Geh/en: Spy of the Cen tury is an impressively documented and dramatized account of virtually the whole spectrum of espio nage activities during the Cold War (see back of jacket for some of the highlights of Gehlen's career). (continued on back flap) With eighty-seven illustrations, some never be fore published, and au nique glossary of terms.
