Est November 1991 June 2017 Circulation 1,950 The Gazette The newspaper of Gamlingay, East Hatley and Hatley St. George GALA FAIR - GAMLINGAY’S CARNIVAL - 20 YEARS AGO Traditionally held on the last Saturday in June, 1997 was the last Gala Fair, an event started in 1970 to help raise funds to build the original Community Centre (now the Eco Hub). The story is told in a comprehensive scrap book of news cuttings, photos, posters and other memorabilia from each year between 1970 and 1997. The book shows how the early days were predominantly about the siting of a building on the newly opened Playing Field and the formation of a Management Committee, which held its first meeting on 10 November 1970. The Gala Fair had developed from the May Fair based at the Village College where early sideshows included the WI cake stall, Brownies roll a penny and a bottle stall. 5 a side football, tug o’ war and a dancing school display were also featured. Subsequent years saw much wider and more adventurous community involvement in line with the growing village population and various events evolved: The Village Pillory started in 1973, where the paying public could throw rotten tomatoes, eggs and soot/flour bags at brave volunteers (we were truly mad in the 1970s). It proved very popular with the onlookers but stopped after a few years due to Health and Safety concerns, which is easy to see why when pictures of those who were pilloried are seen. Gala Princess competition proved a most popular event such that there were over 100 entrants on one occasion. Louise Dimmock was the first title winner in 1974 with Sharon Robins and Claire Powers her attendants. Later winners included Danielle Scholes 1981, Helen Turner 1983, Karen Gibson 1987, Tracy Chapman 1994 and the last, Alice Lucas, in 1995. The Princess headed the Gala procession riding in a prestigious car provided by Alec Norman and later, Brian Evans. Tip the lady out of bed 1975 was a sideshow where a platform (bed) would tip sideways if the paying public hit a small target with a wooden ball. The bikini clad lady was subsequently tipped into a large tank of water. OK on some of the hot sunny days but often decidedly cold on the windy Playing Field and a firm favourite with the village lads (and dads)! Queen’s Silver Jubilee 1977 The Jubilee princess, Laura Smith, opened the proceedings and the village celebrated in style with many events amongst which were ‘It’s a knockout’ (team competition with large and silly tasks- won by Continued on page 8 The Gazette June 2017 1 Due to changes concerning data The protection, The Gazette is very Gazette View The cautious about reproducing pictures of children. Everything can go right one day and terribly wrong another. But as life goes on we realise that we have to keep going, no matter what. Life at the parish church has been good of late. We may have no resident priest but as I reported at our annual meeting in April, everybody, and I mean everybody, is rallying round to help and support - and that is great to see. Services, house groups, money raising activities, social activities and the like are continuing seamlessly. So who needs a priest I hear you say? Well we do, but at the moment one is not forthcoming. And that, if we are not careful, might just be a reason to get us down. We have been through the process of producing our parish profile, advertising the position and allocating an interview date. But all to no avail. There have been enquiries, and there have been applications; however it was not felt that any of the applications were worth following up to the interview stage. Nine months further down the line and we don’t seem to be much further forward. But, as I said at the beginning, we have to keep going, no matter what. We have to continue with the process and believe that somewhere, somehow, God has the right person just waiting to leap out and make themselves known to us. It has been shown that a vacancy of a year or so in many ways is good for a parish. It makes us reflect inwardly and examine what we do and who we are without the vicar trying to influence us. But it has also been shown that if the vacancy goes on for too long the members of the church can get down hearted, disillusioned and slowly drift away. We at the parish church are determined to keep going, to keep strong and confident that the vacancy will soon be over. And one way in which we can do that is to pray. So I invite all of you who are in the habit of praying to join with me and perhaps use the following: Lord, call to our church a true shepherd, a person of God, a minister of Christ; and make us, with him or her, a church joyful in worship and united in witness, working, caring, praising, loving, to the glory of your name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Thank you so very much. With best wishes to you all. Chris Miller Licensed Lay Minister and Churchwarden 4 The Gazette June 2017 Gamlingay Baptist Church Stocks Lane, Gamlingay Church Secretary: Mrs Linda Fraser 01767 677710 www.gbchurch.org.uk June 2017 “I didn’t go to religion to make me happy. I always knew a bottle of Port would do that. If you want a religion to make you feel really comfortable, I certainly don’t recommend Christianity.” ― C.S. Lewis Often the greatest discomfort that many of us experience surrounds things that DIARY we don’t understand or can’t explain. As a Christian, many of the questions I get Church Services are about the supernatural or miraculous. They usually start with, ‘Do you believe Worship every Sunday Morning in that stuff?’ and move onto ‘How can you believe that? How are miracles even 10.45am (with J.A.M for children) possible?’ So let me take this opportunity to share some of my experiences, which are often uncomfortable, but also incredible. Communion is always celebrated on The first Sunday in June we are celebrating Pentecost (check out Acts 2 for this the first Sunday of each month awesome account), which is when God poured out His Holy Spirit on thousands, as Jesus promised would happen. It is this power that lives in all those who believe Family Service in Him that allows for the impossible to be made possible. Sounds crazy right? But Sunday 25th June 2017 10.45am what if I told you it’s not. Weekday Meetings There are many stories I could share with you, where the impossible has been Wednesday 7.30pm made possible: when someone prayed for my painful dodgy right knee (years of and as advertised pain) and the pain was taken, never to come back again; or when I’ve prayed for healing of people’s backs, knees, hands, and seen God heal and restore people. For Children However, there’s one that I want to focus on. Back in April, I was working with the J.A.M. Every Sunday 10.45am Chaplaincy team in Peterborough. Our duties landed me spending time with Nico (Apart from Family Service) who is homeless. We started talking about life over a sandwich. He mentioned to me that he had no sight in his right eye, and only twenty percent in his left, due “Messy Church” to cataracts. So, I decided to ask him if I could pray for him. I put my right hand Saturday 24th June 2-4pm on his left eye, and just asked God, by the power of the Holy Spirit, in the name of Jesus, to restore Nico’s eye. When I finished praying, Nico was shocked, overjoyed, Women’s Prayer Brunch and honestly, a bit freaked out, that he could see perfectly from his eye. The Saturday 17th June 2017 at 10.00am impossible made possible, sight restored to the blind (check out Luke 4:18, these a time to share, pray and eat together. are Jesus’ words). Craft & Hobbies Group-spend time But why did God do this? Well, I believe so as to show us, His people, that he loves together us, and wants to restore us. working at different crafts Thursday 1st June 2017 10am If you are sat there, reading this, feeling slightly uncomfortable, that’s ok. I am too sometimes. But, the reality is, that the Christian faith is one that is more than just Coffee Morning the easily explainable. It isn’t always comfortable, but it is always astounding. In aid of Gamlingay BC and 2017 Charities I am sure that you probably have an opinion or thought on the miraculous, and I Thursday 15th June 10.am-11.30am would love to hear all about it, and further share with you what I believe, whether why not join us for tea/coffee and a you agree with me or not. cake? The Gazette June 2017 7 Gamlingay Players). There were competitions for decorated bikes, pushchairs and hats , handicraft , flower arranging, cake and pot plant displays . A procession of floats was won by the Royal British Legion. The day ended with a Church Street family party, yard of ale competition, pram race, community singing and a disco. Decorated floats were a mainstay of every Gala with up to 40 being entered one year, all manned by different village groups on lorries voluntarily supplied by local business. Each year had a different theme for the decorations and some very ingenious displays emerged from the participating village organisations. Judging took place on the Playing Field and the procession then followed a route around the village via Mill Street, Cinques Road, Green Acres, Green End and Church Street back to the Playing Field where the official Gala opening by the Gala Princess was held. Hundreds of village residents followed the procession and then enjoyed the afternoon and evening entertainments of sideshows , arena events and Harris’ Funfair, a regular fixture for the Gala. Gala Programmes The scrapbook contains a number of Gala programmes in which some of the advertisements are from local businesses now closed - JG Jakes fruit and veg, Empsons Garage, M Knibbs butchers, Izzard reclamation, Fowler Bros., Ken Darlow, Centra Stores, Chapmans General Stores. Others still here are Gamlingay Pharmacy, Hi Sell, John Newman Bodyworks and Lindsays Bakery. The early programmes were single A4 folded sheets, Roneo stencil copies (before photocopiers) and developed into excellent printed, glossy productions with comprehensive event timetables and background information, Gala themed quiz and crossword and so on. Many of the early covers were designed by children from the First School. Gala Fun Run - another addition to the scope of Gala events in the 1990s which attracted many participants from way beyond Gamlingay was our own Fun Run. A further added attraction was the Christmas Gala when a decorated sleigh was made and Father Xmas toured the village and visited the school and playgroups. Official Opening of Community Centre May 6 1980 Ten years after the inauguration of the Playing Field, the Centre was finally built at a cost of £71,000 and opened by John Docherty manager of Cambridge Utd. The ceremony was preceded by a renowned football match between Gamlingay and Cambridge Utd. who had just completed their best ever season finishing 6th in the 2nd division (Championship today) and were formidable opposition for a village team. Cambridge won 9-1 and a crowd of 1200 were entertained. The single village policeman, Mr. Jakins, was on hand to keep law and order! An autographed programme is in the scrapbook and a signed football/small display from the match are held in the Eco Hub. Demise of the Gala Fairs The Gala followed a well established format for 25 years and as with most voluntary committees a natural decline occurred. The last Gala was in 1997 and the Community Centre closed in 2010 for redevelopment into the excellent Eco Hub the village has today, well supported and self financing. Gala Scrapbook The many villagers who took part in the Gala Fairs, either as organisers, competition entrants, donors, float builders and drivers etc. or just visitors who came along to meet friends and neighbours will find the scrapbook brings back many memories. So, if you need transport for medical appointments (hospital, doctor, dentist, physiotherapy, etc), to visit a spouse/partner in hospital/care home, etc, please contact us on 07519 493 701 If there is no answer, leave your name and telephone number and someone will ring you back. Please note: There is a charge of approximately 25p per mile payable to the driver to cover the cost of fuel, etc. There is a minimum charge of £1 for local destinations. We take passengers to all the hospitals and various clinics in the area: Addenbrookes, Bedford (North & South), Lister, Royston, Hinchingbrooke and Biggleswade. Please give as much notice as possible as we might not be able to provide last minute transport. AN OPPORTUNITY TO HELP! Are you getting under someone’s feet? Are you looking for a useful past-time? Do You like driving? Do you have a spare morning or afternoon, and do you like talking to people and want to get out and about? … then perhaps you could become a volunteer driver for the Gamlingay and Hatleys Car Scheme, which provides transport for essential purposes to residents of Gamlingay, the Hatleys and surrounding villages. Our villages have little or no public transport, and the car scheme is becoming increasingly well known amongst residents as a valuable support - but the scheme urgently needs more volunteer drivers to continue that support. Your help would be to get residents to their appointments, which might be for medical, dental, optician, etc purposes, shopping or community activities - for driving only! You would not be required to do the shopping or provide physical assistance. The scheme is entirely voluntary and flexible to suit your availability, so you would drive on whichever days or hours would be convenient to you, and all mileage driven will be reimbursed at approx. 40p per mile. The scheme is sponsored by South Cambs District Council. Volunteers must have held a full UK driving licence for a minimum of 2 years and have a DBS check, but there are no other qualifications. Just your goodwill! Please contact Alison Baker for more information, or to sign up. Tel: 07519 493701 or 650122 The Gazette June 2017 9 Waresley Cricket Club Huntingdonshire The first month of the new season has been one of mixed emotions at the club. It is always nice to get out on the field once again and the results (at the time of writing) have been encouraging with the 1st XI winning their first two League games against Eaton Socon & St Ives while also beating Loughton in a friendly. In the one defeat so far against Premier League Burwell, young Sam Johnson hit a maiden century while Joe Colebrook took four wickets – all very encouraging! The 2nd XI lost their first League game but Thomas Baker bowled steadily and took 3 good wickets while the under 11’s beat Godmanchester in their season opener. On a sad note, the club lost a much loved Life Member in April when Peter Walker passed away at the age of 90. Peter came to Waresley from Yorkshire in 1943 before settling in Gransden & running a successful Forage business. He was a key member of the Cricket Club when it was reformed in 1949 & played and umpired for many years. A great committee man, he was a successful fundraiser & many in Gamlingay will remember him for organising the weekly Bingo which ran for more than 30 years. His wife Mary passed away a few years ago and he leaves his sons Alan & Chris - both well-known sportsmen in the area. A great friend & servant to the club, he was still supporting us till the end and will be greatly missed. A reminder that practice nights for the seniors are held every Thursday night at the ground while the youngsters have practice sessions every Friday evening from 6pm to 8pm until the end of July. The new ECB Cricket All Stars sessions for 5 to 8 year old run on Saturday mornings from 20 May to 8 July. Remember, if you would like to join us or find out more about Waresley Cricket Club, including our plans to expand our pavilion and celebrate our 150th anniversary in 2019, or just come and watch, please get in touch or come up to the ground and meet us in person – as we said, we are a friendly bunch and still have a well-stocked bar!
