Early in 1982, the author was assigned to teach an introductory overview college course in robotics to senior mechanical engineering students. At the time no one book could be found that contained all the basic qualitative and quantita- tive knowledge on robots. The objective of this book is to present the basic concepts of robots to engineering and technology students and to practicing engineers who want to grasp the fundamentals in the growing field of robotics. The text is organized into twelve chapters. Chapter 1 gives an overview of robots : definitions , basic robot types , actuators , and transmissions. Examples of industrial robots are also presented to reflect the basic design concepts. Chapter 2 treats the definition, types, and design considerations in the application of grippers. The next chapter is devoted to the discussion of a number of end- of-arm tooling components. Chapter 4 deals with end-of-arm acces- sories having tactile sensors and compliant wrist devices. In Chap- ter 5, we introduce the notion of robot control from simple fixed se- quence mechanical controllers to sophisticated computer controllers. Chapter 6 deals with nontextual programming of robots. This is then extended to textual programming using computer languages in Chapter 7. Robot vision systems are described in Chapter 8. Major applications of robots in manufacturing operations are discussed in Chapter 9. The next chapters present the analytical basis for robots cover- ing the following topics: workspace geometry, kinematics force analysis , trajectory generation, and control. David D.
