Penfound Isn't exactly a Johnny-rome-lalely lo the business. In
!act. he had the distinction ol playing with Ronnie Hawkins and
many of the guys. who evenwally formed The Band. from 1959 to
JY65. lie was one of The Hawk's Canadian originals. doesn·t regret
the split. and admits the band was too big 1with seven people I !or the
kind or money that was ~ pa_idi n Toronto in those days.

RECORDINGS
Summer Garden, It was the summer of 1964, Levon and The Hawks had just left Ronnie
Port Dover, Ontario Hawkins and they were booked Into Pop Ivy's Ballroom In Port Dover,
Ontario. I traveled with a few musician friends from London to the
1964-00-00 (Summer)
summer beach resort to see them play. There, I had the opportunity to
not only enjoy The Hawks summer concert, but I also brought with me a
Not Fade Away Phillps four trad< reel to reel tape recorder to audiotape the band. You
didn't need permission in those days to record a concert. The gig was
No Sweeter Girl
one of the most astounding sessions I have heard the boys play up to
Lucille (incomplete) that point. Jerry Penfound on Tenor Sax and Flute also played with the
Hawks that beautiful summer evening in Port Dover. Songs like Share
Peter Gunn Theme
Your Love, Not Fade Away, Kansas City, Georgia, Short Fat Fanny and
Money Robbie's Blues were being recorded on my full size tape recorder. A
You Don't Know Me funny thing happened during Robbie's blues, the Echo machine
accidenUy did<ed on and made Robbie's Blues sound as if it were
Bo Diddley
recorded In a professional sound studio. My tape recorder mlc was
Forty Days placed directly in front of the band's sound system speaker, so all the
Hoochie John Blues instruments and voices were mixed evenly.
Robbie's Blues A few weeks later Levon, Richard, Rid<, Garth and Robbie were doing a
gig at The Brass Rail in London, ON. My friend, guitarist Chuck Grover,
Kansas City
who is a friend of Robbie's, heard that the boys were in town and
Memphis, Tennessee staying at one of the East End motels. Since we were invited to visit, I

them. As they listened intently to all the subUe nuances of their

awesome music, I'm sure they knew then, that their split from Ronnie

No Particular Place To Go audio tapes can also be a source of valuable infonnatlon. A few years
later I loaned the original reel to a Toronto DJ and it has never been
Turn On Your Love Light seen s,nce. It's gratifying to know that Digital Downloads, a Vinyl Record
Hi-Heel Sneakers and probably thousands of bootleg copies of that tape have been
distributed around the wo~d for fans of The Band and Levon and the
(The Story Of) Woman, Love And A Man
Hawks to enjoy.
