Any income earned from her work helped with the family support. These were the circumstances of the Sarto family when their second child, Joseph Melchior, later Pope Pius X, was born on June 2, 1835. On the following day the child was baptized in the Parochial Church of Saint Michael by Father Pier Paolo Pellizzari. Antonio Sarto, the infant's uncle, was the godfather. From his earliest years, Joseph (affectionately called by the diminutive of Beppo) was an extraordinary child. His good, pious parents instilled similar virtues into their off spring. The boy was obedient and respectful, carefully avoided evil companions but had good wholesome fun with other boys of his age. He had great devotion to our Lady, often visiting the shrine of Our Lady of Cendrole which was situated about a half mile outside Riese. Joseph received his first formal education from the Austrian schoolmaster, Francis Gecherle. Don Luigi Orazio, curate, supplemented Gecherle's instructions with the fundamentals of grammar and Latin. Both men agreed that Joseph was an exceptionally intelligent boy and should continue his studies. With the consent of the boy's parents, Don Luigi made arrange ments for Joseph to attend the ginnasio at Castelfranco for a regular classical course. Joseph attended the classes at Castelfranco from 1846 to 1850. He walked the four miles each way almost every day—in the cold of winter as well as in the heat of summer. His parents made many sacrifices to keep him at the ginnasio. Thus, he was often satisfied with a crust of dry bread which he brought with him for his lunch. To save shoes Joseph carried them slung over his shoulders, putting them on when he reached Castelfranco. At the ginnasio Joseph applied himself to his studies with diligence. His professors proposed him as a model for his schoolmates. He held first place in his studies and at the end of each year he invariably received first prize. Joseph spent his free school hours with the family of Giovanni Battista Finazzi, the district mail collector and friend of Signor Sarto. - 8 - f
