I had contract work in my field of public history, was actively gigging with a jazz combo, and planning to work on a book. Then in February came the news that a new virus was sweeping the globe. By the first week of March, I was self-quarantined with my wife and two cats. As I am an immunocompromised individual due to a kidney transplant, I experienced a year like no other. I was not alone; the entire population of the earth experienced a similar, if not much worse, year. Therefore, this book is an ode to the first responders and front- line workers who took on the Herculean task of countering the effects of a worldwide pandemic. From infectious-disease scientists and hospital workers to grocery store clerks and delivery drivers, the world still managed to function, albeit in ways not seen since the Dale A. Stirling 1918 influenza pandemic. November 2022
