It is with much pleasure that we express a few words of thanks to all who
contributed to the realization of this book. First of all, we acknowledge our debt
to the colleagues who greeted our initiative with enthusiasm and who generously
submitted contributions to this volume. Our thoughts go out especially to the
late Howard Mayer Brown and Bernhard Meier who, unfortunately, did not live
long enough to realize the articles they had intended to write in honour of the
dedicatee.
Furthermore, we are grateful to Anna Boker, David Collyer and J. Evan
Kreider, who unselfishly corrected the language usage of some German and
