Werecognisedthatsuchaprojectwouldrequirelarge-scalefunding,but thisproblemwassolvedwhenQuentinSkinnerwasawardedaBalzanPrize in 2006. After some discussion, the Balzan Foundation generously agreed tothefollowingscheme:thatweshouldassembleaninternationalgroupof youngerscholars,preferablyatthepost-doctoralstageoftheircareers;that theyshouldbeinvitedtoattendaseriesofconferencesatwhichtheirwork wouldbepresentedanddiscussed;andthattheirconferencepapersshould subsequently be revised and extended with a view to turning them into a book.
