Acknowledgements The most important person in bringing this book to life is Cindy Stolten. She must be the most incredible Internet research wizard in the world. Without her assistance, this book would have taken many times longer to write. In addition, writing a book while working with someone online in "real time" who lives in a different state certainly makes the long hours at the keyboard much more enjoyable. The next three persons to thank are Tris Bolinger, David Dalton, and Debbie Radvar. Tris' steady hand and incredible computer skills created www.BirdFluHype.com almost overnight. From the publishing world and an excellent writer, David helped to add clarity and editorial comment when I was stuck on concepts and feeling lost in the text. Debbie put her marketing hat on and relentlessly pushed me through to completion. Without the support of the entire OsteoMed II staff, nothing in my life would be possible. You've picked me up when I was tired and discouraged, and you have all played a very significant role in my life, personally and professionally. Linda Corlett Cheryl Leuthaeuser, D.O. Gail Singer Kirsten Ericson "Dee Dee" Laff Chris Speck Nicole Gordon Melissa Luby-Hammad Annette Sylvester Carol Kilbane Faith Mann Clay Walsh, D.O. I extend gratitude to my dear friends and editors par-excellence, Ingri Cassel and Don Harkins. Don's inspiration started me down the road to the final copy of this book, challenging me to examine the problems we are facing globally and generously imparting his editorial comments. Ingri kept me honest by not letting me hedge on the hard facts. I couldn't have done this without you two. I am indebted to my closest friends, who have been cheering me on to completion of a book for many years: Lou Paget, Bonnie Shaker, and Sandi Asazawa. Without your encouragement and prodding, the brim of my procrastination hat would still be pulled down over my eyes. Thank you for being there; here's to the books to come. A few other people need to be mentioned for the support and inspiration they have given me; they know the specifics, and I am grateful they are in my life: Kathi Williams; Dawn Richardson; Stephanie Cave, MD; John Wilson, MD; Doug Moore, PhD; Doris Rapp, MD; Corwyn Beaumont and Dave Block. A big thanks to my wonderful editor, Norm Friedman. You took a diamond in the rough and turned it into pure gold. Dedication To my mom: You've always believed in me and have been my biggest cheerleader. Thank you for all you have done for my entire life. To my husband Kevin: You make everything in my life worth living. You are my best friend and my inspiration. Your support of me in every way is more than a dream come true. Thank you for making my life so much fun and filling it with so much love. Special Dedication To the memory of Nicholas Regush, my friend and my mentor. Thanks for your contribution to this book and all that I write. Hysteria should always be looked upon with suspicion; there are logical steps rational minds need to take before declaring the worst-case scenario has arrived. Viewed incrementally, the first steps should be to advise caution, and as the facts become substantiated, alarms and warnings should be introduced. At all cost, panic should be avoided. What would lead national governments and global authorities to abandon a common sense, rational approach to a few deaths, call for international planning, and predict global chaos at the first signs of a virus among flocks of chickens and a handful of people? Because I have a rather suspicious attitude toward the government in general and the vaccine industry in specific—a way of thinking that has evolved from thousands of hours over many years investigating the problems caused by vaccines—a number of questions crossed my mind early on as I started to search for plausible motivations. 1. Why are so many farm chickens sick? What has made these birds more susceptible to the effects of the H5N1 virus? Why are droves of migratory birds dying in obscure locations across the globe? 2. Who wants all the chickens dead? Whose interests would be most served by elimination of the independent farmer's lifestyle and means for supporting his family? 3. Why are the human cases clustered in Southeast Asia? As the virus appears in other parts of the globe, is there a connection between the reported outbreaks? 4. The vaccine manufacturers always win, but the stakes are higher than usual. What's behind the nearly blank check being handed to them? Or better, who is behind it and why are they pushing for mandatory vaccination? 5. Are global conditions similar to those at the time of the 1918 Great Pandemic? From those few questions, this story began to unfold. Once I started to look for answers, the truth was hidden in plain sight. When you go to the Land of Oz and pull back the curtain, it is amazing what you find. Introduction Writing a book is a daunting task and finding the common thread connecting vaccines, animal rights, the environment, the pernicious objectives of agribusiness and pharmaceutical companies, the vestiges of war, and the agendas of governments seemed at first to be impossible. At one point, the thought of writing several books instead of one book was even entertained. But as the facts accumulated and jelled, the connections between these diverse topics came together with stunning clarity. The first chapter, 'Thinking for Yourself," sets the tone for the rest of the book. You, the reader, are challenged to change your beliefs to something more reasonable than what has been convincingly and authoritatively presented by the media. Chapters 2 and 3 explain what an influenza virus is, how it is named and how a pandemic is said to occur. Some readers will scan this detailed information, and others will savor it. To put the current pandemic discussion in perspective, Chapter 4 reviews three previous influenza pandemics and offers a different view as to why they occurred. Chapter 5 discusses the similarity between the feverish planning for a bird flu pandemic and two similar events: the threat of a smallpox outbreak and the swine flu scare. The chapter dispels many misconceptions about smallpox and points out the similarities between the 1976 swine flu program and the occurrence of bird flu today. One frightening difference is that the families of persons injured by the bird flu vaccine will have no recourse against vaccine manufacturers, even if the vaccine causes their relative's demise. Needing a plan to keep everyone vigilant, Chapter 6, "The New Playbook Arrives" details the 10-step plan engineered by risk communication experts. Understanding this scheme is essential for dissecting news reports as the bird flu drama continues to unfold. Influenza vaccines are discussed in Chapters 7, 8, and 9. How the vaccine is manufactured, what is in the vaccine and what is planned for the bird flu vaccination programs will help you make an informed decision about injecting flu shots into your body—or the body of your children. Chapter 10 outlines the laws and presidential executive orders that could lead to requirements of mandatory vaccination. With billions of dollars being spent to stockpile Tamiflu, the drug that is supposed to prevent the spread of bird flu, Chapter 11 explains why Tamiflu won't work and why its use during an influenza outbreak may actually result in resistant "mutant" viruses, resulting in a more serious problem. Chapter 13, "The Killing Fields," and Chapter 14, "Sick Chicks in the U.S." introduce the impact of agribusiness—especially in Southeast Asia. The annihilation of more than 200 million free-ranging chickens, raised primarily by independent farmers, is causing a socioeconomic strain on already poor populations. The economic interests of the multinational agribusiness companies in the U.S., Thailand, China and India have much to gain from the elimination of local chickens. Reports of dead migratory birds around the world have led some officials to blame wild birds for the spread of H5N1 but raises the critical question: What is suppressing the immune system of these hearty birds, making them more susceptible to the effects of influenza viruses? The answer, which involved the connection between Agent Orange and unhealthy birds, is discussed in Chapter 15. "Sick Migratory Birds: Canaries in the Coalmines" warns us that the mass culling of our early-warming messengers is akin to shutting off a blaring fire alarm without looking for a fire. The most significant cluster of human deaths from H5N1 has been in Vietnam. Chapter 16, "Sick Humans," points out that irresponsible environmental contamination, there and around the world, is leading to outbreaks of aggressive viruses. The more contaminated the soil and water are with dioxin, chemicals, nuclear waste, human sewage and industrial filth, the more likely humans will become susceptible to serious consequences from influenza. Chapter 17, "Tying It All Together," does just that: Bird flu is a wake up call to global chemical contamination. The chapter revisits the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic—linking the deaths to the massive chemical warfare used during World War I and offering evidence that chemicals are contributing to bird flu today. Chemical clean-up, not pandemic planning and massive vaccinations, is what is necessary to stop the next global catastrophe. 'The Activists Playbook," Chapter 18, is a response to the government's playbook detailed in Chapter 6. This chapter offers suggestions for taking an environmental stand and protecting your family against the insidious agendas exploiting the threat of an influenza pandemic. Community disaster planning is an extraordinarily good idea. Natural disasters can occur anywhere and at any time. Having a plan to deal with food shortages, power outages, and increased healthcare requirements is essential for every city and town. But FOWL! goes far beyond encouraging public planning. FOWL! affirms the urgency of joining diverse activist groups— environmentalists, animal rights proponents, vaccine awareness groups, anti-war
