Foreign Ownership of U.S. Agricultural Land Through Februaiy 28,2003, by the Farm Service Agency, U.S.
Department of Agriculture.
Abstract
Foreign persons owned 14.9 million acres of U.S. agricultural land as of February 28, 2003. This is slightly
more than 1 percent of all privately held agricultural land and .66 percent of all land in the United States.
These and other findings are based on an analysis of reports submitted in compliance with the Agricultural
Foreign Investment Disclosure Act of 1978.

Preface
This is an interim report of foreign ownership of United States (U.S.) agricultural land information received
and processed through February 28, 2003, under the Agricultural Foreign Investment Disclosure Act of 1978.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Farm Service Agency is developing a new reporting system. An interim
reporting system will be used until the development is complete.

Summary
Foreign persons owned 14.9 million acres of U.S. agricultural land (forest land and farmland) as of
February 28, 2003. This is a decrease of 190,800 acres from 2002, and only slightly more than
1 percent of all privately held agricultural land in the United States. These and other findings are
based on information submitted to the U.S. Department of Agriculture in compliance with the
Agricultural Foreign Investment Disclosure Act of 1978. Forest land accounted for 46 percent of all
foreign-owned acreage, cropland for 17 percent, pasture and other agricultural land for 34 percent,
and nonagricultural land for 3 percent.
Foreign ownership of U.S. agricultural land has remained relatively steady since 1992, slightly above
or below 1 percent of all privately owned agricultural land in the United States.
