The United States, the SovietUnion,China,Cuba,andtheformercolonialpowersentangledthem- selvesincountlessAfricanconflicts.Duringtheperiodofstatecollapse,the mostconsequentialinterventionswereintracontinental.Africangovernments, sometimesassistedbypowersoutsidethecontinent,supportedwarlords,dic- tators,anddissidentmovementsinneighboringcountriesandfoughtforcon- troloftheirneighbors’resources.Theglobalwaronterror,liketheColdWar, increasedtheforeignmilitarypresenceontheAfricancontinentandgenerated externalsupportforrepressivegovernments.Ineachofthesecases,external interests altered the dynamics of internal struggles, escalating local conflicts intolargerconflagrations,withdevastatingeffectsonAfricanpeoples.
