Combned wth Adobe Photoshop, Geographc Imager revolutonzes the way spatal magery s created, edted and mantaned by allowng spatal mage files to be created, edted and managed n the famlar and wdely- used Adobe Photoshop envronment. Geographc Imager allows the most common spatal magng tasks to be performed where they should be done, n a powerful raster edtng envronment, and adds the dozens of powerful Adobe Photoshop tools and operatons to those that one can perform on such magery. Ths verson of Geographc Imager s the first n a long lne of geospatal tools for Adobe Photoshop that wll contnually mprove on each prevous verson by addng addtonal file support, tools and mprovements to exstng tools. Geographc Imager s also the perfect companon sute for MAPublsher and Adobe Illustrator users. Ths manual assumes that the user s famlar wth Adobe Photoshop CS2 and has at least a basc understandng of geographc nformaton systems (GIS) termnology and concepts. Please refer to your Adobe Photoshop CS2 user gude for more nformaton on usng Adobe Photoshop CS2. A glossary of GIS terms s ncluded at the back of ths manual for your reference. By followng ths manual you wll learn how to work wth spatal magery usng the Geographc Imager functons n Adobe Photoshop CS2. Ths manual covers the concepts necessary to open, edt, transform, mosac and georeference geographc mages. A varety of sample magery has been provded on your Geographc Imager CD or wth your Geographc Imager download for use wth ths gude and the tutorals (see Chapter 9). However we do encourage you to experment wth your own data to gan addtonal experence wth Geographc Imager’s tools and functons. Whle most spatal magery s of a format that Adobe Photoshop can natvely open and edt, wthout the presence of Geographc Imager all geospatal propertes of such mages wll be lost upon resavng or exportng the mage. In addton to ensurng a safe and trouble-free edtng envronment for your geospatal photographs and scans, Geographc Imager offers specalzed tools for performng certan spatal operatons on the mage beyond the standard mage edtng functons natve to Adobe Photoshop. The followng s a bref outlne of the functons and tools ncluded n ths verson of Geographc Imager. GEOTRANSFORM TECHNOLOGY Avenza has partnered wth Blue Marble Geographcs (http://www.bluemarblegeo.com) to ntroduce Blue Marble’s core GeoTransform technology nto Adobe Photoshop va Geographc Imager. GeoTransform, whch forms the bass for Blue Marble’s Geographc Transformer product, embeds sophstcated mage reprojecton and tlng nto Geographc Imager and s the underlyng technology behnd Blue Marble’s popular Geographc Transformer stand- alone magng product. GeoTransform creates an mage map from a source mage, georeferencng nformaton, and destnaton mage parameters, and allows for the performance of varous spatal transformatons on geographc magery. GEOREFERENCING IN ADOBE PHOTOSHOP Geographc Imager adds a world coordnate grd to the page and pxel grd systems natve to Adobe Photoshop. It allows for the creaton and mantenance of ths mage-to-world relatonshp throughout most Adobe Photoshop operatons so that once the mage s resaved or exported the georeferencng s not lost. Geographc Imager provdes smart support for most mage level operatons, such as crop and resze, and tracks the changes to the mage geometry, updatng the reference nformaton accordngly. Some Adobe Photoshop functons are not supported and as such the performance of such operatons may dsturb the georeferencng of the mage. See page 18 for more nformaton. OPENING/SAVING SPATIAL IMAGERY Upon the openng of a geographc mage, Geographc Imager automatcally recognzes f the mage s a geoTIFF and f not, attempts to locate a matchng reference file for the mage, and populates the Geographc Imager nformaton palette accordngly. Upon savng a geographc mage usng the natve Adobe Photoshop Fle > Save or Fle > Save As commands, Geographc Imager automatcally creates a correspondng reference file or the geoTIFF header nformaton. All Adobe Photoshop mage export formats are supported by Geographc Imager ncludng the natve Adobe Photshop .psd format and the Adobe Acrobat .pdf format. All formats other than geoTIFF wll be referenced usng an external reference file such as a world file. PROJECTING Geographc Imager ncludes extensve support for 1000’s of geographc and projected coordnate systems that allow spatal magery to be projected and transformed n Adobe Photoshop. Support for customzed projectons as well as the ablty to save custom defintons for later use s also ncluded. v What Is Geographic Imager MOSAICKING Geographc Imager allows Adobe Photoshop to automatcally combne multple geographc mages to create mage mosacs whle retanng the georeferencng propertes n the new larger mage. You can create seamless resultant mages from ndvdual mage files provded that certan condtons are met.. GROUND CONTROL POINTS (GCP) Geographc Imager allows the referencng of non referenced mages usng known ground control ponts and the transformaton of such mages to fit the GCP’s wth mnmal errors. Multple transformaton types are supported ncludng affine and polynomal. Ground control pont data can also be saved as a reference file for later use. FLOATING LICENSING Geographc Imager offers a floatng lcense opton whch enables lcenses to be shared across a network by multple users. In such a scenaro the Geographc Imager clent software can be nstalled on an unlmted number of computers whle concurrent use s lmted by the number of floatng lcenses purchased. Ths tr-platform soluton offers support for Wndows, Mac and Lnux servers alke and ncludes the ablty to check-out a lcense for remote use on a laptop computer as well as Internet-enable access for remote users. Floatng lcenses are a wonderful cost- effectve way of sharng software amongst multple users n a networked envronment. SECURITY Geographc Imager ncorporates a lcensng system that s desgned to deter unauthorzed copyng and nstallaton of the software. Actvaton protects the ntellectual property and nnovaton at the heart of the software ndustry. And n partcular that of Geographc Imager. Avenza s commtted to elmnatng unauthorzed use of ts software and s dong so n a manner desgned to have a mnmal effect on lcensed users.
