The concept proved so successful that the workshop was ultimately introduced as a formal course in composition at the Master of Music level. Since then, we have explored a wide spectrum of text choices; classic texts adapted from Euripides and Sophocles as well as established Canadian playwrights marked our earliest efforts. The visit of Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s grandson to the University of Toronto inspired us to tackle three scenes from Anna Karenina. With The Essential Hamlet, we gave a contemporary operatic spin to the six pivotal scenes of Shakespeare’s towering masterpiece. Gradually, we have moved towards original scenarios, both in concept and story line. Three Scenes from Urban Life, presented light hearted as well as serious aspects of life in our increasingly diverse city. We have also experimented with site- specific opera; three ten minute operas set in the innately theatrical environment of a courtroom, were actually performed in the Moot Court at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Law. Rob Ford, the opera, tugged opera into the no-holds-barred ring of the ridiculous and since then we have alternated between serious (Antigone, 2013) and comedic (Encounters, 2014) subjects. This season, in coproduction with Campbell House Museum, the 19th century home of Sir William Campbell, Chief Justice of Upper Canada, we present five performances of Footsteps in Campbell House; a unique onsite operatic experience as audiences walk through the rooms and encounter the lives of those who lived in this extraordinary landmark home. ABOUT CAMPBELL HOUSE MUSEUM Campbell House Museum is a vibrant public space where members of Toronto’s diverse communities gather to discuss, to create, to perform and to socialize, giving life to the words “freedom of expression.” The museum maintains its link to the administration of justice by serving as an important meeting and debating place for lawyers and the judiciary. The museum acquires and preserves artifacts related to Chief Justice William Campbell’s life and times, and to Campbell House’s ongoing history. The museum informs and inspires visitors through its history, collections, and unique context in the heart of downtown Toronto. For Campbell House Museum Liz Driver, Director/Curator Shannon Todd, Assistant Curator For U of T Opera Sandra Horst, Director of Music Studies Michael Patrick Albano, Resident Stage Director Catherine Tait, Administrator Special thanks to Dean Burry for his musical dramaturgy and organizational assistance.
