Through various references from passages of the Qur’an and Hadith, and illustrating points through some very simple, contemporary examples, the benefits of treading the path that leads to definite salvation in this world as well as the Hereafter are enunciated. While translating these thoughts into the English language, I have tried to keep as close as possible to not only the letter but also the spirit of these thoughts, while at the same time, attempting to retain a flow that would do justice to the conversational nature of the address. The underlying appeal and applicability of thought is universal, and is very lucidly supported with appropriate references. It is our hope that readers anywhere and everywhere will be able to identify themselves with the thoughts expressed within these lines and derive guidance in the lives. Afia. (A self-appointed person through any decree, howsoever lofty, or even someone nominated by anyone else must not be followed). We are the creation and servants of the one and only Almighty Allah therefore, it is up to Him to appoint our leader and master, and He has appointed Muhammad to guide us. 7 ■■■■ ■■■ Purity of Action It is quite obvious that if someone is appointed by another person, the appointee will not be free of faults. However, Allah's 3s- choice can never be at fault and a person who is appointed by Almighty Allah ’8s- cannot make a wrong move, and say or do anything wrong.. I would like to present to you the example 1 ! of Muhammad M here. There has never been a person with more complete a personality. 1 i On one occasion when a group of people was setting out on : ! an expedition, he had specifically appointed one of them as the leader, and told everyone to obey him. No one else had been so designated, despite their wisdom and knowledge. It so happened that during the course of the expedition, the leader became angry about something, and reminding everyone of the Prophet’s orders for obedience, ordered all the Companions 4*> to collect firewood and light a fire. When this was done, he ordered everyone to jump into the fire. When some of them started to run towards the fire, there were others who stopped them, saying that we had professed Islam and the teachings of the Prophet M so that we may be saved from the fires of hell if despite following Mohammed we have to be fuel for the fire, then what’s the point? The former however, reminded them of the Prophet’s M orders to obey the leader appointed by him, and insisted on jumping into the fire. They were again stopped by the latter group. While this argument was taking place, the fire died down, as did the leader’s anger, and the matter ended there. 8 j ■■■■ ■■■ When the matter was presented before the Prophet M, he said: 1]'you badjumped into thefire you would not have come out of it till the Day of Judgement, and would have stayed there forever And said: No one must be obeyed if such obedience amounts to disobeying Allah §?■/ obedience is conditional to being in accordance with Sharia' * [Sahih Muslim] The person who had been appointed as the leader of the expedition had erred, but is there any one who can claim never to have made a mistake? Is there a leader who has never faltered? Prophet Muhammad M has never erred and Yes this honor has been bestowed by Allah Allmighty on the Prophet. Allah says in the Qur’an: Allah knows best where (and how) to carry out his mission.... - Al-lnam -124 Since every word and action of Prophet Muhammad is totally devoid of mistakes and errors, and he has been appointed by Allah as our leader whose obedience is fardh or obligatory for us, then it goes without saying that we are duty-bound to obey only him and no one else. 9
