While we are proud of the ser vices rendered to our children and community, we would he negligent if we did not believe there is room for improve ment. It Is hoped that you w ill share this pride with us and also our ambition in reaching the goals of improvement of instruction to f u lf ill the fe lt need in the lives of the pupils. Our children are our greatest wealth and our most chal lenging responsibility. Let us place them above business, p o litics, industry and, above a ll, petty and selfish things that weaken and destroy a people. The race moves forward only through its children. Let us rededicate ourselves to the welfare of childhood. We hope to throw more light upon the work of your school. We want to increase your knowledge of our great responsibility of educating Forty-ninth Street School children. We tru st that you w ill be most happy to apply this knowledge in co operation with the teachers, pupils and community organiza tions in bringing about a better understanding between the home and the school. When things go wrong at school, as they sometimes w ill, When the road between the home and school seems a ll uphill, When you think your child is learning-slowly, and your ambition is high, You want to feel proud, but you w ill have to sigh, Don't tear your hair and strike the eeiling, Take care of your emotions, and hide your feelings. Just come in for a conference with the teacher to investigate, You two, together, w ill have an understanding, so don't hesitate— To come to Forty-ninth S treet School when there are words of praise; Your v isits bring joy on those happy days. When there are problems about the child to be solved, The teacher stends ready to become totally involved, To help the child to grow strong enough to jump over tough spots. The home and school together develop values to f i t the to ts. We help them to realize their po ten tialities and enjoy themselves While they bring out their best personalities. Forty-ninth Street School is a place where the teachers, pupils and parents learn and grow, together. We grow by use of such devices as regular* parent-teacher participation and group discussions. We welcome you to help us evaluate and improve our educational program. PREFACE Since the school is increasingly taking the to tal child into consideration, i t is apparent that some consid eration should "be given to informing the parents about the work of the school. By doing so, a better relationship be tween the home and the school w ill be created. "When there is conflict between the home and the school, there is a greater conflict within the child; therefore, i t was the purpose of this report, "Follow Your Child to School" to serve as a medium of bringing about a closer contact be tween Forty-ninth Street School, its parents and the com munity, so as to motivate the patrons to participate in the to ta l education of their children, and so that a conflict may not exist within the child. This report is divided into the following seven parts: I. An Overview of Forty-ninth Street School II. General Information III. General Rules and Regulations IV. Scholarship V. Organization and A ctivities VI. Instructional Program VII. Some Do’s and Don'ts for Parents The m aterials that comprise the divisions are actual recordings and summaries of the program carried on at Forty- ninth Street elementary school, whose student body is viii predominantly negroid. The report also includes the general policies of Los Angeles and California public education. The parents, patrons and community w ill receive the report in parts through study groups, parent-teacher con ferences, le tte rs , forums and mimeographed loose-leaf forms. From time to time, new bits of information and changes w ill be inserted into the report.
