Nowadays, quality Chrysanthemum blooms are available at any time. How do you know if a chrysanthemum is fresh? Look for bright colour in the bloom, green leaves that are not limp and the bottom of the stem showing no brown. Why are blooms often sold with a paper cup around the head? Paper heads or nets around the bloom are used for protection during logistics and transport and these are best removed carefully with scissors. Can you tell us more about the technique for dyeing the blooms? If you need a flower outside of nature’s colour palette, Chrysanthemum blooms can be sprayed with water-based paint colour. You can also place the stems in water coloured with food dye and white blooms will absorb the colour over several days. Is it true that the leaves are edible? Almost all Chrysanthemum are used for decoration and are not edible. In Asia some special cultivars are used for teas but these are not the Chrysanthemums on sale in Europe. How sustainable is chrysanthemum growing in Holland? Dutch Chrysanthemum growers are making a lot of progress in terms of sustainability. This includes biological pest control, closed water systems, heat storage and investments in equipment and new cultivation techniques that are achieving substantial redctions in energy and carbon. Dutch growers mainly produce for the European market, which means they can keep the carbon footprint of their logistics as low as possible. Flora | | AUTUMN 2022 9 CHRYSANTHEMUM CALLING Tell us more about the history of Chrysanthemum? Chrysanthemums were grown in China as a flowering herb as far back as 1500–1400 BC. They were viewed as an exulted plant with special properties and only noblemen were given permission to plant them in their gardens. Chrysanthemums are found on the finest Chinese porcelain. There is even a town in China named Ju-Xian (better known nowadays as Xiaolan Town or Zhongshan City), which literally means ‘Chrysanthemum Town’. The Chrysanthemum was introduced into Japan in the eighth century, where the Emperor soon declared the flower the national symbol. It also served as the source of inspiration for the Imperial Seal, depicted as a single flower with 16 petals. This recurs in many places – nowadays the flower can be found on every Japanese passport and the 50-yen coin. The Supreme Order of the Chrysanthemum also still exists, which is the highest honour bestowed on Japanese citizens, and is awarded by the Emperor. In the past emperors were honoured by covering their thrones with chrysanthemums and the Japanese court is also known as the Chrysanthemum Throne. Today chrysanthemums in Japan are viewed as a symbol of a long and happy life. In the annual Japanese Festival of Happiness the Chrysanthemum is lavishly celebrated. In 1689, Jacob Breynius was the first person in Europe to describe the cultivated chrysanthemums we know today but it was the doctor and botanist Carolus Linnaeus who gave the chrysanthemum its name. “Chrys” means “gold-coloured” in Greek, and refers to the flower’s original colour. “Anthemon” means “flower”, together making the name “golden flower”. Design: Adolfo Alicart Image: Thomas de Hoghton Taking inspiration from the symbolic association of chrysanthemums with the JJaappaanneessee Imperial Throne, Atelier Alicart recreates a miniature Japanesee ggaarrddeenn,, employing chrysanthemums as stepping-stones over the waterr ooff aa lake criss-crossed by m bridges in this X-shaped Tatehaannaa oorr “standing flowers” compositioonn..
