Ninespeciesof theLat;1,-obium(s.str)nomuraigrouphavehithertobeenre- portedfromJapanbyNAKANE(1955,p29)andWATANABE(1980,p 21;1986,p688; l987, pp 8,11; 1991,pp. l45, l49,151, 153; 1996,pp. 10-11); fivespecies from Honshu, three fromShikokuandone from Kyushu. Themembersofthisgroupare mainlyfoundintheupperhypogeanzoneofmountainareasinJapanandcharacterized bylargebody,vestigialeyesanddegeneratedhindwings.Thesemorphological fea- turesofthegrouparesimilartothoseofthegroupofL. (s.str)pollens,thoughitcan bedistinguishedfromthelatterbythereddishcolourofbody,andheadandelytranot transverse. ExaminingthemembersofthegenusLat;1,-obiumfromJapan, Ihave foundfive interestingspeciesbelongingtothisgroup.A量eracarefulexamination,ithasbecome clear that theyarenew tosciencebecauseofdifferentconfigurationofmalegenital organ.TheywillbedescribedinthepresentpaperunderthenamesL.(s.str)tanakai, L. (Figs. l,2,7-9) [Japanesename:Tanaka-kobane-nagahanekakushi] Bodylength:10.0-13.0mm(from frontmarginofheadtoanalend);5.3-5.8mm (fromfrontmarginofheadtoelytralapices). Bodyelongate,subdepressedaboveandparallel-sided.Reddishbrownandmod- eratelyshining,withheadandpronotumsometimespaler,palpi, legsandanalendyel- lowishbrown. Male. Headsuborbicularandgentlyelevatedmedially,aslongasbroa widest atbasalthirdandmorestronglynarrowedanteriadthanposteriad;lateralsidesarcuate; frontalareabetweenantennaltuberclestransverselyflattenedandimpunctate,provided withaconspicuous setiferouspuncture insideeachantennal tubercle; disc sparingly coveredwithdistinctsetiferouspunctures,except forsmallsmoothvertexa1area; lat- ero-posteriorpartsalsowithsetiferouspunctureswhicharecloserandfiner thanthose onthedisc;eyesverysmallandalmost at,theirlongitudinaldiameteraboutone-sixth aslongasthepostocularpart.Antennaeextendingtoposterior fifthofpronotumand not thickenedtowards theapicalmost,basal twosegmentspolished, theremainings opaque;1stsegment robustanddistinctlywidenedapicad,morethantwiceaslongas broa 2ndwellconstrictedatthebase,1.5timesaslongasbroad,butahalfaslongas and somewhat narrower than 1st (2nd/1st=0.80), 3rdremarkably longer thanbroad (length/width=1.75)andalittlelongerthoughasbroadas2nd,4thto7thequal inboth lengthandwidth tooneanother,eachsomewhat longer thanbroad(length/width= 1.25), 8thand9th subequa1inboth lengthandwidth toeachother, each slightly shorter (8th/7th=0.90) thoughas broadas 7th, 10th somewhat longer than broad (length/width=1.25)andequal inlength tobutslightlyshorter than9th(10th/9th= 0.91),apicalmost fusiform,twiceaslongasbroadandl.5timesaslongasbutslightly narrowerthan10th(apicalmost/10th=0.94),subacuminateattheapex. Pronotumoblongandnearlyparallel-sidedorveryfeeblynarrowedposteriad,ap- parently longer than broad (length/width=1.31) and distinctly longer (pronotum/ head=1.24)butslightly narrower(pronotum/head=0.94) thanhead, lateralsidesal- moststraight except nearanteriorandposteriarangles,anteriormargingentlyand broadlyrounde posteriormarginnearlytruncated,anterioranglesobtuseandnotvisi- blefromdorsalside,posterioronesrounded;surfacemuchmorecloselycoveredwith strongersetiferouspuncturesthanonheadexcept for anarrowmediansmoothline through the length of pronotum. Scutellum subtriangular, sparsely scattered with somewhatcoarsesetiferouspuncturesandcoveredwithmicroscopicgroundsculpture. Elytra trapezoidal, distinctly narrowed anteriad, slightly longer than broad (length/width=1.06) andslightly broader (pronotum/head=1.06)butalittleshorter (pronotum/head=0.86) thanpronotum; lateralsides feeblyarcuate,posteriormargin broadlyemarginateat themiddle; posterioranglesbroadly rounded; surfacemore closelyandmoreroughlypuncturedthanonpronotum,bearingavaguedepressionbe- NewSpeciesoftheLath,-obiutnno,,11uaiGroup 87 Fig. 1. (Figs 3,10-l2) [Japanesename:0hdai-kobane-nagahanekakushi] Body length:9.4-10.4mm(fromfrontmarginofheadtoanalend);4.8-5.6mm (fromfrontmarginofheadtoelytralapices). MaleandFemale. Infaciesresemblestheprecedingspecies,butcanbedistin- guishedfromitbythedarkercolour,somewhatsmallerandnarrowerbody,andthefol- lowingpoints. Headwith lateral sideslessarcuateandmorenumerously puncturedonlatero- posterior parts; pronotum distinctly narrowedposteriad, notsolong(length/width= 1.27)asintheprecedingspeciesandasbroadashead,surfacesimilarlypuncturedto that ofhead; elytrarelativelyshort, nearly as longasbroadandmuchshorter than pronotum (elytra/pronotum=0.82), surfacemoresparingly andslightly moredeeply punctured;inmale,8thsternitesubtriangularlyexcisedatthemiddleofposteriormar- gin and longitudinally depressedalong themiddlein front of theemargination; 7th sternitemoreshallowlyexcisedatthemiddleofposteriormarginthan8thsterniteand depressedbeforetheexcisioninthe formofahorseshoe. Malegenitalorgansimilar ingeneralappearancetothatoftheprecedingspecies, butdiffersfromitinthefollowingpoints:ventralscleriteofmedianlobemuchbroader at theposterior thirdandmuchslenderer inapical third, acutelypointedat theapex; fusedparamereslenderer,morestronglycurvedtotherightinapicalpartasseenfrom dorsalsideandmuchmorestronglycurveddorsadattheapicalpartinprofile. (Figs 5,16--18) [Japanesename:Daisensan-kobane-nagahanekakushi] Body length:9.2-10.4mm(fromfrontmarginofheadtoanalend);5.1-5.4mm NewSpeciesoftheLat1l,・obiumno,I″t atGroup 93 (fromfrontmarginofheadtoelytralapices). Similar ingeneralappearancetothethreeprecedingspecies,butcaneasilybe distinguishedfromthembyconfigurationofmalegenitalorgan. Male. Headsuborbicular,gentlyelevatedmedially,widestbeforeposterioran- glesand feeblynarrowedanteriad; lateralsidesgentlyarcuate;surfacesparselyscat- teredwithdistinctsetiferouspuncturesexcept forsmallmedianareawhichisglabrous, thepuncturesbecomingmorenumerousandsmallerinthelatero-posteriorareasthan ondisc. Antennaeelongate,similar inarticulation to thoseof thethreepreceding species. Pronotumoblong,almostparallel-sidedinmedianpart,thoughmorestronglynar- rowed inposterior fifth than in anterior fifth,evidently longer thanbroad (length/ width=1.40), distinctly longer (pronotum/head=1.26) though slightly narrower (pronotum/head=0.93)thanhead;lateralsidesnearlystraightexceptnearanteriorand posteriorangleswhicharerounded,anteriorandposteriormarginsasinthethreepre- cedingspecies,surfacedenselycoveredwithcoarsesetiferouspuncturesexcept fora narrowmediansmooth linethroughthelengthofpronotum,butsometimesobscurein anteriorhalf.Scutellumsimilar tothoseofthethreeprecedingspecies.Elytranearly square, slightly dilated posteriad, as long as broad, apparently shorter (elytra/ pronotum=0.79) butalittlebroader (elytra/pronotum=1.11) thanpronotum, lateral sidesgentlyarcuate,posteriormarginemarginateatthemiddleand formingare-en- Figs. 16-l8. Abdomenelongate,graduallydilated towardsthe7thsegment andabruptlynar- rowed fromthe8thtoanalend;3rdto6thandanteriorhalfof7thtergiteseachclosely coveredwithsuperficialpunctures,posteriorhalfofthe7thand8thtergitesmuchmore sparinglyandmuchmorefinelypuncturedthanon thepreceding tergites; 8thstemite subtriangularlyexcisedatthemiddleofposteriormarginandnarrowly,longitudinally depressedalongthemedian line,eachsideof thedepressioncloselyprovidedwith shortblackishsetae;7thsternitealsoshallowlyemarginateatthemiddleofposterior marginandellipticallydepressedatthemiddleinfrontoftheemargination. Genitalorganmorecloselysimilar inconfigurationtothatofL.(s.str)konpiraY, WATANABE (l991, p. 149) than thoseof the threeprecedingspecies. Median lobe widestat thebasal fourthandmorestronglynarrowedapicad thanbasad,evidently shorterthan fusedparamere,ventralscleritebroaderandtruncatedat theapex.Fused paramereslightlycurvedtotherightandgraduallynarrowedtowardsthepointedapex indorsalview,surfaceprovidedwithafinelongitudinalcarinaoneachsideofmedian part. Female. Similaringeneralappearancetomale, thoughdiffering from it inthe 7thand8thabdominalstemiteswhicharenotmodified. Typeseries. Holotype, (3, allotype, Mt. MATSUMOTO, thetypespecimensofthisnew specieswere foundunderstonesinagullyandinaheapofrockdebrisdepositedina ditchattheroadsideinamixedforestofdeciduousbroadleavedtrees,Ptunussp and Q1le'cus so'''ata, and theconiferous tree, Pin1lsdensjf1o,a, at an altitudeof about 700m Et、,,no1ogy. Thenameofthepresentnewspeciesisderived from“Mt.Daisen- san”,thetypelocality. Lathrobium(s.str.)moritaiY.WAIANABE,sp nov (Figs6,19-21) [Japanesename:Morita-kobane-nagahanekakushi] Bodylength: 10.9-11.2mm(fromfrontmarginofheadtoanalend);5.l-5.7mm (fromfrontmarginofheadtoelytralapices). Thepresentnewspeciesresemblesthe fourprecedingspecies in facies, though considerablydifferent fromtheminconfigurationofthefusedparamereofmalegeni- talorgan. Bodyelongate,nearlyparallel-sidedandsubdepressedabove.Colourdarkredand moderatelyshining,withpalpiandlegssomewhatpaler.
