Never displayed orpublished, the nearlysevenhundreddrawingsinthiscollectionconstituteanarchiveoffirsthandobservationsbyfourteenartist-reporters,called SpecialArtists,embeddedwiththeUniontroops.TheartistssenttheirdrawingstoFrankLeslie’sIllustratedNewspaper,whereJoseph Becker,himselfaSpecialArtist,eventuallybecameartdirector.
