Abstract ThemaleofAstenusshibata1T.ITOisdescribed for the first timeon
specimensfromthreemajorislandsoftheRyukyuArchipelago.
Astenusshibata1iseasilydiscriminatedfromalltheknowncongenersfromJapanby
theapicalmostsegmentofantennaeextremelylargeaswellasrobust. Itwasdescribed
bythepresentauthorin1995fromKagoshimaandOkinawaPrefecturesonthefemales
only. Iamgoingtodescribeitsmaleinthispaper,whichisdedicatedtothememoryof
the late Dr. MasatakaSAT0.

M ale. Similar to female in general appearance; each apicalmost segment of
antennaverylargeandmorethanthreetimesaslongastheprecedingone(Fig 2).
Inthemale,7thand8thsternitesofabdomenimpunctateandwithascratch-like
microsculpture on all surface; apical margin of the former sternite bisinuate, very
weaklyprojectinginthemiddle,andarmedwithstoutspines15or16innumberalong
itsedge;apicalmarginofthelattersternitestronglyexcisedandveryweaklydepressed
in front oftheexcision(Fig 3).
Aedeagusmoderatelysclerotizedexcept fordorsalside,withaventralprojection
1anceolateinshape,weaklyandnarrowlydepressedalongmiddle,narrowednearapex
