Mary Baker Eddy Pamphlet and Serial Publications consists of printed and published materials written by and with notations by Mary Baker Eddy and were transferred from her last residence at Chestnut Hill. Scope and Content Note The Mary Baker Eddy Book Collection consists of books from Eddy’s Chestnut Hill home (400 Beacon). The bulk of the books were transferred from Mary Baker Eddy's study after her passing in 1910. The Collection consists of Bibles and other titles by authors Eddy was known to have liked or referenced, books by contemporaries, and books by Eddy. The collection was created after 1910 when selected books from Eddy’s study at Chestnut Hill were first transferred to the Church Archive. The collection continued to be added to through 2006 as notations and handwriting were found in the remaining books at Chestnut Hill. If research of a book from Chestnut Hill revealed the book was once in Eddy's room, such as on the desk or bedside table, or if the notations were credited to Eddy, the book was transferred to the Mary Baker Eddy Book Collection. These books were transferred from the first floor library, music room, and back parlor; and the second floor study, sitting room (pink room), west room, and dressing room. Books in all of the rooms in the home were documented in the 1917 and 1951 Chestnut Hill inventory. Not all of the books in this collection contain notes or markings in Eddy’s or her secretaries’ hand as they may have been second hand. Also, it is not known if Eddy read all of the books in this collection. Additionally, these books do not represent all of the books Eddy may have read or acquired throughout her lifetime. Some of the books in the collection, although few, did not come to the collection from the Chestnut Hill home. These books were acquired by the Archives prior to the opening of the Library in 2002 and were added to this collection because of notations identified as written by Eddy (or her secretaries). At one time, this included books from the Calvin A. Frye Library, acquired in 1947, but these books were returned to the Calvin A. Frye Library Book Collection. This collection does not consist of all of the books or published writings by Mary Baker Eddy. Other published and printed materials such as pamphlets and articles are not in this collection; rather, they are in the Magazine and Pamphlet Collection and Eddy/Frye Scrapbooks. Arrangement: The collection consists of two series, Series I, Mary Baker Eddy Bibles and Bible Reference Books; Series II, Mary Baker Eddy Books. Series I, Mary Baker Eddy Bibles and Bible reference books consists of forty-four items numbered B00001 -B00041. These Bibles were owned by Mary Baker Eddy or owned by Asa G. Eddy (B00002) and, possibly, Calvin A. Frye (B00005). The collection does not consist of all of the Bibles owned or referenced by Eddy. Some Bibles consist of notations by Eddy most notably, the Baker Family Bible (B00029) and The Book of Psalms (B00016). The Bibles include notations by others such as Laura E. Sargent, John Carroll Lathrop, Adam Dickey, and Calvin A. Frye. Series II, Mary Baker Eddy Books consists of approximately four hundred books from Eddy’s Chestnut Hill home as well as books acquired by The First Church of Christ, Scientist Archives. The books from the Chestnut Hill home were selected because of their connection to Mary Baker Eddy either by their location at Chestnut Hill or their notations. The majority of the books in the collection were transferred from Mary Baker Eddy’s study at Chestnut Hill to the Archives. Some of the books were given to Mary Baker Eddy and inscribed to her from the author including Martha Baldwin Ensign, Willis Vernon Cole, Joseph Adams, Charles Adolphus Murray Dunmore, Edward Augustus Jenks, William P. McKenzie amongst others. Almost half of the collection consists of various editions of books written by Mary Baker Eddy including, Miscellaneous Writings. 1883 – 1896; Poems; Pulpit and Press; Science and Health with Key to Scriptures; and Unity of Good. Several authors in this collection were referred to by Eddy in her writings and interviews including Mrs. Felicia Hemans, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Edward Young. Books are arranged alphabetically by author. In the case of no author, the book was arranged by title. The Bibles in Series I are numbered beginning with B00001. Books in Series II are numbered beginning with B00100. Titles added after the initial numbering date, were inserted into the numbering with an ‘A’ after the next consecutive alphabetical author.
