These four volumes open upa new series of critical studies called poethik polyglott, published by LIT Verlag. The first volume was dedicated to the topic of Multilingual Literature and Translation (2011), the second to the Imagery and Ideology of Multilingualism in Literature and the Media, in particularthemythofBabelandthefigureoftheLabyrinth(2014),whereas the third volume was focused upon the multiple relationship between Mi- grancy and Multilingualism in World Literature, including its aquatic and terrestrianimageryinabothhistoricalandsystematicperspective(2016). Beforegivingadetailedsummaryofthevariouscontributions(p.4–19) webrieflypresentthe‘figurative’lineofthevolume. Its first focus is the geocultural figure of the ‘Indies’, the transconti- nental pluralization of India within the AmerIndian continent, where the oxymoronic figureofEastWestIndiaemerged, followed byaseries ofin- versions of an ideological and imaginary, a political and arhetorical kind. Thisshifting figureconveys quiproquos andchiastic configurations, cross- 1 Theterm‘ideology’isusedinthegeneralsenseofanopenorclosed“systemofideas andideals”(TheOxfordDictionaryofEnglish,ThirdEdition,2010). 2 K.ALFONSKNAUTH&SUBHACHAKRABORTY DASGUPTA cultural, subversive andinterlingual processes, climaxing insome parono- mastic and palindromic formations with a highly significant semantic and ideologicalchargeinandaroundtheworksofV.S.Naipaul,GabrielGarcía Márquez andAldous Huxley. The multiplica- tionanddifferentiationoftheIndiesalsoconcernedtheIndianOcean,Ami- tav Ghosh’s ‘Sea of Poppies’ (cf. SUBHA CHAKRABORTY DASGUPTA), which in the 19th century became a cross-road of forced transcontinental migrations, of coolitude, of a ‘pychotropic’ commerce creolizing Indian, African and colonial European tongues. The ludic and oniric figures of Afro-Indiancoolitude(KhalTorabully)andoftranscontinental Luso-Afro- Indiansonâmbulismo(MiaCouto)(cf.BIAGIOD’ANGELO)transcended theCaribbean context and concretized the apparently abstract, yetmythic, conceptofÉdouardGlissant’slaRelation.Againsttheabyssalbackground of a historic configuration, the tricontinental and eventually worldwide slave trade, draining a ‘dysfigured’ humanity, Relation begins as the fig- urativeprocessofdésirade,thedesireofapoeticreconfigurationandtrans- figuration of human relationship, initiated with Glissant’s epic poem Les Indes/Lézenn(cf.TUMBASHANGO LOKOHO),wherethe‘Indies’arede- territorialized on their way towards what Glissant later called a creolizing Tout-Monde.The‘désirade’ ofan‘oceanic’, idiomatically profuseanddif- fuse Tout-Monde constitutes a sort of Erfüllungsfigur (Erich Auerbach), a prefigurationofanasymptoticfulfilment, coextensivewiththeliterarytext. Alongside the multifarious figures of multilingualism subsists the op- posite figure of ‘mutilingualism’, at first in the form of an existential ‘ni- hilingualism’ ororiental ‘mu’,butalsointheformofanideological ‘glot- tophagy’, themutingandsilencingofothertonguesbyimposinganexclu- sivegloballanguage.
