HealtH/NutritioN $16.95 P r a s “Kedar Prasad has put forward an original and logical approach for prevention and a d improved management of heart disease. His suggested strategy is simple and easy to follow and involves no potentially harmful drugs. I strongly recommend this book.” StepHeN C. BoNdy, pH.d., professor, Center for Occupational and Environmental Health, Department of Medicine, University of California, Irvine F In this practical scientific guide, leading researcher in cancer, heart disease, and diabetes prevention Kedar N. Prasad, Ph.D., reveals the latest revolutionary discoveries on the i g use of antioxidants and micronutrients to treat heart disease. He details how the proper combinations of vitamin and antioxidant supplements can greatly increase the effective- h ness of standard medical treatments for heart disease as well as help balance cholesterol t levels and blood pressure, minimize plaque and clot formation, reduce angina and ath- erosclerosis, and prevent the onset of heart disease despite family history. H Prasad shows how chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, homocysteine levels, e and free radical damage are the chief culprits in the progression of heart disease and that merely changing your diet and activity level and regulating cholesterol and blood a pressure cannot fully counteract an unhealthy internal state. He provides an easy-to- r follow daily supplement regime for multiple age groups to target free radical damage t and cell injury and stop the progression of heart disease and its related complications. Sharing the scientific data on familial heart disease and antioxidant use, he debunks D the flawed conclusions of the medical community that vitamins and antioxidants are i ineffective for heart disease, revealing how their studies focused on specific micronu- s trients rather than synergistic combinations. e Offering the missing complement to the standard care of medications, diet, exer- a cise, and lifestyle changes promoted by mainstream medicine, this guide provides a s powerful approach to heart disease prevention, treatment, and care. e KEDAR N. PRASAD, Ph.D., is the chief scientific officer of the Premier Micronutrient Corporation, the former director of the Center for Vitamins and Cancer Research aw n at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, and the former president of the dit h International Society of Nutrition and Cancer. Boone, M.D. Medical training encompasses the basics of human nutrition as well as the biochemistry and history of elemental vitaminology and nutri- tion science. However, as a profession and as a society, we have moved beyond the mere daily allowances required to avoid rickets, scurvy, and the like into a world that demands erudite answers regarding optimal dietary supplementation. As a physician specializing in preventive cardi- ology, I stood at the center of this controversy amidst patients in search of answers, often skeptical medical colleagues, and a growing body of literature debating the effectiveness of dietary supplementation. Then I met Kedar N. Prasad, Ph.D., a scientist with the brilliance and academic credibility to illuminate the truth with regard to dietary supplements. I was first attracted to Prasad’s work with NASA as a radiation biol- ogist charged with helping to protect military personnel from the dan- gers of radiation exposure. His groundbreaking work delineated a unique supplement that seemed to protect the subject from the DNA damage and eventual carcinogenesis caused by ionizing radiation. Persuaded by Prasad’s detailed research, I began to use his protective formulation of dietary supplements to shield my patients’ internal cellular environment from the radiation they received from ultrafast CT scans of the heart. A recent study in Germany showed Prasad’s radiation-protection formula- tion reduced double-strand DNA breakage by 58 percent versus placebo v FiHeDi.indd 5 10/21/14 10:55 AM vi Foreword in a study of people before and after diagnostic CT scanning. To this day I continue to use Prasad’s formula before CT scans to mitigate the effects of radiation exposure caused by advanced imaging. As I continued with my work in preventive cardiology, Prasad and his group initiated numerous research trials with disparate groups across the country. I tracked these developments closely, always seek- ing to remain on the cutting edge of disease prevention. Over the years research emerged that demonstrated a myriad of benefits to Prasad’s formulas. Supplement formulations developed around his ideas were shown to enhance immunity, reduce oxidative stress, improve hearing, promote concussion recovery, lessen tinnitus, treat post-traumatic stress disorder, and reduced inflammation! Such widespread benefits can be traced back to the unifying concepts of cellular protection from the basic tenets of Prasad’s work—the control of oxidative stress and chronic inflammation. In fact, over the last thirty years it has become increas- ingly apparent throughout the medical world that most disease and even aging itself can be traced to a core of inflammation and oxidation. Excited by these widespread applications, I decided to embark upon a research trial in my own field of expertise: the prevention and eradica- tion of heart disease and stroke. Several anecdotal cases of remarkable cho- lesterol profile improvements were seen in my practice as I expanded my use of Prasad’s Heart Formulation beyond radiation protection to daily use in selected patients. These exciting results led Prasad and I to initiate the Boone Heart Institute’s MAVRIC Trial (Multivitamin Antioxidant Vitamin Reversal of Intima-Media Thickness of the Carotid Artery). Our study group consisted of seventy robust professional firefighters from South Metro Fire Rescue in Denver, Colorado. They took no medication or other supplements for the duration of the trial. For one year these fire- fighters took Prasad’s Heart Formulation as directed while my medical team tracked their cardiovascular risk factors. As always, the key tenets of the Heart Formulation* revolve around the control of the free radicals causing oxidative stress and chronic inflammation. The Heart Formulation *See www.multimmunity.com for product information. FiHeDi.indd 6 10/21/14 10:55 AM Foreword vii accomplishes this control through a unique blend of micronutrients that include dietary and endogenous antioxidants coupled with vitamin D, B-vitamins, and minerals (avoiding heavy metals) in a twice-daily dosing schedule. To our amazement, but confirming our hope, Prasad’s approach controlled anatomic measurements of the growth of firefighter atheroscle- rosis, as well as remarkably optimizing the firefighter cholesterol profile (i.e., LDL [bad] cholesterol decreased from 132 mg/DL to 111 mg/DL; HDL [good] cholesterol improved from 42 mg/DL to 51 mg/DL, which constitutes a 30.3% improvement in LDL to HDL ratio). In addition, echocardiographic measurements of heart stiffness (E/A ratio) improved 13 percent. To this day, I recommend Dr. Prasad’s formula to many of my patients, often in conjunction with powerful drugs and lifestyle changes. Read Fight Heart Disease with Vitamins and Antioxidants to see how Kedar Prasad has provided us all with a new day of clarity in nutri- tion science . . . but more importantly, take his formula as I do! Jeffrey L. Boone, M.D., is an internationally recognized expert on the effects of mental stress on the heart. He is the founder and director of the Boone Heart Institute in Denver, Colorado. In 2007, he was selected as one of the 160 Top Doctors in America by Men’s Health Magazine and was listed as one of the seven- teen Top Cardiovascular Doctors in America for Men. In addition, he works as a consultant in preventive cardiology for the Denver Broncos and the Colorado Rockies. Dr. Boone is a member of the NFL’s Cardiovascular Committee, as well as the founder of the NFL Alumni Association’s Cardiovascular Screening Program, an ongoing investigation into the cardiovascular health of former NFL players. As an international lecturer, Dr. Boone has spoken to tens of thousands of health care professionals around the world. His unique clinical approach focuses on aggressive prevention of cardiovascular disease, including the evalua- tion of the cardiovascular consequences of mental stress, the early clinical use of the latest cardiac imaging techniques, and the advanced detection and treatment of cardiometabolic risk.
