The previous Conferences of the series, promoted by the European Few-Body Physics Research Committee, took place in Budapest (1972), Graz (1973), Tiibingen (1975), Vlieland (1976), Uppsala (1977), Dubna (1979), Sesimbra (1980), Ferrara (1981), Tbilisi (1984), Bala tonfiired (1985), Fontevraud (1987), and Uzhgorod (1990). The European Few-Body Conferences represent a relevant opportunity for European scientists interested in few-body problems, of summarizing and updating, together with colleagues from countries all over the world, the status of art in this field of research, which ranges from the study of atomic and molecular structure, to nuclear and particle physics. The suc cess of this series of Conferences, which also represent a bridge between the triennial IUPAP International Conferences on Few-Body Problems in Physics, testifies the relevance reached by few-body physics in various fields and the important theoretical and experimental contributions pro vided by the European few-body community. During 1991 and January 1992, a wealth of activity in few-body phys ics occurred all over the world: worth being mentioned, in this regard, are the Workshop on Electromagnetic Interactions and Very Light Nu clei (Institute for Nuclear Theory, Seattle, USA, February-June, 1991), the Symposium on Clusters in Hadrons and Nuclei (Tiibingen, Germany, June 15-17, 1991), the Symposium on Mesons and Light Nuclei (Prague, Czechoslovakia, September 1-6, 1991) and, finally, the most relevant event, viz. the XIIIth International Conference on Few-Body Problems in Physics (Adelaide, Australia, January 5-11, 1992). The for mat of the Elba Conference was conceived having also in mind these re lated initiatives; it was decided, in particular, to have Plenary Sessions only, based on invited talks and Discussion Sessions organized by a Convener, and to place special emphasis on the discussion of a limited number of topics, such as the structure of hadrons and hadronic inter actions, the interplay between the quark and meson-nucleon descriptions of few-hadronic systems, the electro- and photo-disintegration of the two-body systems, the novel approaches in few-body problems in atomic, molecular, nuclear and particle physics, the response of few-body systems to electromagnetic and hadronic probes, including also polari zation degrees of freedom, the physics programs of the running VIII and proposed experimental facilities and their impact on few-body prob lems. This Volume contains all of the invited talks and all of the contribu tions to the Discussion Sessions. A total number of 140 participants from 22 countries in Europe, USA, Mrica and Australia, attended the Conference, with the largest delegations from Italy (31), Germany (21), CSI (18), USA (13) and France (10). Many people and Institutions have contributed to the organization of the Conference. First of all we would like to thank Professor Nicola Cabib bo, President of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN) (the Ital ian Agency for Nuclear Physics), whose generous financial contribution made the organization of the Conference possible, Professor Stefano Fan toni, Director of the Elba International Physics Centre, where the Confer ence was held, Professor Giancarlo Dozza, Rector of the Perugia Universi ty, whose printing facilities were largely used during the preparation of the Conference. The sponsorship of the European Physical Society (EPS) and the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) is also very much appreciated. Our thanks are extended to the members of the International Advisory Committee, who responded with many suggestions on the pro gramme and the speakers; to the Conveners, who enthusiastically organ ized their Discussion Sessions; to the Chairmen of the Sessions, who smart ly kept the Sessions within the planned time; to Professor Ian McCarthy, who kindly tackled the difficult task of delivering the Closing Remarks, even if asked about that the very last day of the Conference. We are deeply indebted to all those people who before, during and af ter the Conference provided the necessary support 'to smooth out all the difficulties one usually encounters during the organization of a Conference of this size. The Organizing Committee is particularly indebted to the mem bers of the Conference Secretariat, Mrs. Simona Ceccarelli (lNFN, Sezione Sanita, Rome), who smartly prepared all circulars prior the Conference and the Booklet of Abstracts, and Mrs. Antonella Sapere (Elba Internation al Physics Centre), who helped us very much in solving many of the logistic problems. The invaluable help of Mrs. Paola Di Ciaccio (Physics Laborato ry, Istituto Superiore di Sanita, Rome) and Mr. Giacomo Monteleone (Physics Laboratory, Istituto Superiore di Sanita, Rome), whose contin uous assistance made the task of the Organizing Committee much easier in many respects, is warmly acknowledged. Special thanks are also extended to Mrs. Bruna Ceccarelli (lNFN, Sezione Sanita), for her precious adminis trative help. Finally, we would like to express our appreciation to all speakers for providing us with the manuscript of their papers in the very due time. In planning the social activities of the Conference an important event was foreseen: the celebration of the 60th birthday of two eminent scientists, whom the Few-Body community owe very much: Professors Erich Schmid (Tiibingen, Germany) and Ivo Slaus (Zagreb, Croatia); unfortunately, both of them, at the last moment could not reach us. Particularly sad was the IX reason of Ivo's absence: the dramatic events which occurred in his country. To both of them this volume is dedicated.
