He went to public school. Most of his friends were Protestant. And he had no religious role models. “As a biracial Catholic, one of the challenges of growing up and discern- ing a vocation was the reality that I did not know any black priests or religious brothers,” Deacon Johnson said. When he is ordained to the priesthood in May, he will be one of only three native son blacks to be ordained as a diocesan priest for the Diocese of Baton Rouge.
