Let’s hope it will be as good as 2012 has been to the agriculture industry. As we look back on 2012 and all the great times it provided us all, we must not lose perspective and focus. We must remember that we have to work at keeping Angus in the forefront of customer & consumer minds. The Alberta directors have been hard at work this past fall. Two successful Gold shows and 6 Commercial Auction Mart Steak Fry’s. Thank you to Darlene Glessman, Ricki Fleming and Carolyn Congdon for all your hard work heading the committee’s. Cecilie Fleming did a fantastic job in the AAA booth at Farmfair & Medicine Hat Pen Show getting the word out about Angus and the feedback will provide the AAA with information for this year’s activities. The Angus tag sales have been great for the commercial side BUT what about the purebred side? With the ruling coming into affect on the show side that the 2012 calves must be Angus RFID tagged to qualify for Gold Show points and grants, there were a number of calves not tagged Angus. As purebred breeders how can we promote the “Rancher Endorsed” program and our tag program if we are not tagging our herds? Call the CAA office and order yours today…they will be in your mailbox in a few days! DNA pricing has never been better, why not get all those potential herdsires and donor dams done now? Let’s be proactive and collect the DNA hair samples on our herds the next time you run them through the chutes for shots! To store the tail hair in your office doesn’t cost you anything and is always on hand when required. It is a simple easy way to make sure your herd is protected. I don’t know how many times I have seen herdsires in AI Studs not qualify to draw semen because he can’t be parentage verified. It is 99% of the time the dam that died, if it is in your shoebox in the closet…you are saved! Such an easy and simple solution! The Alberta directors are working hard getting ready for their Strategic Planning meetings in May. They are preparing for the 40th Anniversary of Farmfair this fall and hosting the National Angus show. Watch for directors at the upcoming bull sales and bull congresses. Feel free to contact any of the AAA directors with your thoughts or ideas for 2013. Good luck during the Bull Sale season! Have very happy 2013, happy calving too! Sincerely, Carol High AAA President 3 4 EPD 101 TIPS A bigger EPD isn’t always better – milking ability is negatively correlated with growth and feed efficiency, so higher MILK EPDs are not always the best. Evaluate your cow herd – if you need to improve on milking ability then look for a higher MILK EPD bull, but if you need to improve on growth or maintain milking ability then the highest MILK EPD bull might not necessarily be the thing for you. A smaller EPD isn’t always better – birth weight is positively correlated with calving ease, but lower birth weight means smaller calves, which means more feed to get to your goal yearling weight, and smaller retained heifers which will eventually result in lower calving ease. Want to find out more about EPDs, and what’s right for you?
