Pesticides such as organochlorine insecticides, methyl bromide, etc., are discontinued due to their health hazards. Alternative protection systems (biological products) are the need of the future and should be devised in place of conventional pesticides. Agriculture is deemed as human life’s backbone. Plant protection purely by chemical means has its own disadvantages. Pesticides are found to cause toxicity problems to human life and the environment. Hence, the need for developing biopesticides assumes all the more importance. The crux of the matter is that companies just cannot market a product as eco-friendly; they have to live up to the expectations. However, the trend towards eco-friendly products is making bio-pesticides more noticeable than ever before. Growing consumer awareness for food and agricultural products with less or no chemical residues, and growers’ and farmers’ demand for safer pesticides has triggered a bid demand for bio-pesticides. Consequently, big agrochemical companies too are making inroads into the bio-pesticides market through takeovers, alliances, license deals, collaborations, etc. For example, BASF AG made a marketing deal with US bio-pesticide company Agra Quest while Bayer AG acquired Agrogreen’s (Israel) certain businesses. Apparently such deals are lucrative; however, big companies are wary as any negative effect would mar their brands. Bio-pesticides include microbial pesticides, entomopathogenic nematodes, baculoviruses, plant derived pesticides, and Insect pheromones, are increasingly being tested as alternatives to chemical pesticides and key components of Integrated i Pest Management (IPM). The stark truth is that, however, bio-pesticides constitute a very small fraction of the global pesticides market. Climate in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana is generally hot and humid. The major role in determining the climate of these states is played by south west monsoons. Agriculture plays a pivotal role in the economy of these states. In recent years, indiscriminate use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers lead to increased cost of cultivation and environmental pollution. Due to, energy crisis and increased fertilizer cost have necessitated to use of cost effective organic sources of nutrients to maintain soil fertility, productivity and health for sustainable crop production. Use of organic manures and bio-fertilizers could offer a safe and best option for reduction of currently used agrichemicals. Beneficial microbes such as Rhizobium, associative and free living nitrogen-fixing bacteria, phosphate solubilizing bacteria, arbuscular- mycorrhiza, and other beneficial fungi are considered as bio-fertilizers. The extensive research program on beneficial bacteria and fungi in Varsha Bioscience and Technology’s lab has resulted in the development of a wide range of bio- fertilizers, which satisfied the nutrient requirements of crops, suppression of diseases and increased the crop yields. Experiments in the greenhouse and under field conditions showed that different crops responded positively to microbial inoculations. In particular, Rhizobial inoculants when applied to leguminous crops increased crop yield and quality. An attempt was made to review the reach on bio-fertilizers and their acceptance by farmers in selected districts of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Our review showed that usage of bio-fertilizers and bio-pesticides in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana is significant, but comparatively less. This is due to lack of awareness, availability, cost effectiveness, delivery systems, proper handling etc. This report will focuses on reasons for the non-adoption and bottlenecks in marketing as well as challenges facing the more widespread utilization of bio-fertilizers and bio-pesticides by Andhra Pradesh & Telangana farmers. ii LIST OF CONTENT SR.
