The inventory consisted of 2% less market hogs than last December totaling 8.5 million head. Breeding stock, at 1.0 million head, was unchanged from the previous year. North Carolina ranks 2nd nationally in the total number of hogs and pigs behind Iowa's 15.4 million head. Minnesota is a distant 3rd with a 5.5 million head inventory. The State's pig crop dur- ing the September - November HOGS AND PIGS Number on Farms, Sows Farrowing and Pig Crop, 1999 period totaled 4,550,000 December 1, 1998-2000 1 head, 1% above the same months last year. CATTLE ON FEED UP Nationally, cattle and calves on feed December 1, 1999 in feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head for slaughter totaled 11.8 million head, up 6% from a year ago and 3% above December 1, 1997. Placements in feedlots during November totaled 2.17 million, 5% above 1998, but 2% below 1997. Net placements were 2.1 million. During November, placements of cattle and calves weighing less than 600 pounds were 766,000, 600- 699 pounds were 657,000, 700-799 pounds were 416,000, and 800 pounds and greater were 331,000. Marketings of fed cattle during November 1999 totaled 1.8 million, 5% above 1998 and 7% above 1997. Other disap- pearance totaled 83,000 head during November, up 6% from 1998, but 2% below 1997. The average number of layers on hand during November was 11.3 million, unchanged from a year earlier. This number consisted of 3.7 million layers for table eggs and 7.6 million for broiler-type and egg- type hatching eggs. S. BEEF, PORK AND RED MEAT PRODUCTION RECORD HIGH Beef production in the U. S. totaled 2.15 billion pounds dress weight, up 2% from the previous record high for November set in 1995 and 7% above the previous year. Cattle slaughter totaled 2.94 million head, up 6% from a year earlier. The average live weight increased 5 pounds to 1,216. Pork production, totaled 1.71 billion pounds dress weight, up 1% from the previous record high for November set in 1998. Hog kill totaled 8.9 million head, 1% above 1998. The average live weight increased 1 pound to 262. Veal production, totaled 22 million pounds dress weight, down 2% from the previous record low for November set in 1998. Calf slaughter totaled 104,400 head, down 7% from a year ago. The average live weight increased 15 pounds to 300. Lamb and mutton production, totaled 22 million pounds dress weight, an increase of 12% from the previous year. Sheep slaughter totaled 329,200 head, up 10% from the previous year. The average live weight increased 2 pounds to 132. Nationally, commercial red meat production totaled 3.89 billion pounds dress weight, up 4% from the previous record high for November set in 1995 and up 5% from the 3.72 billion pounds produced in November 1998. Commercial red meat production includes slaughter in federally inspected and other plants, but excludes animals slaughtered on farms. Commercial slaughter of livestock in North Carolina during November 1999 totaled 247 million pounds, up 10% from the 224 million pounds a year earlier. Cattle slaughter totaled 16 million pounds, up 10%. Hog slaughter, at 231 million pounds, was up 10% from a year earlier. Sheep and lamb slaughter, at 7,000 pounds, was down 63%. The average live weight per head was: cattle 1,057 pounds; hogs 250 pounds; sheep and lambs, 109 pounds. Commercial red meat production in North Carolina during November 1999 totaled 180 million pounds dress weight, up 11% from the 163 million pounds a year earlier. Intentions for the top 7 producing States compared with 1999 are as follows: North Carolina down 1%, Minnesota, Arkansas, and Virginia unchanged, Missouri up 9%, California, up 14%, and Indiana down 4%. The number of turkeys actually raised in 2000 may vary from growers' intentions shown in this report depending on feed costs, supply of hatching eggs, cost of poults, and prices growers receive for turkeys during the next few months. North Carolina turkey producers raised 46.5 million turkeys in 1999, down 7% from the previous year and expect the number raised in 2000 to decrease another half million birds. Turkeys raised in the United States during 1999 totaled 273 million, down 4% from the 285 million raised during 1998. North Carolina ranks first in the number raised with 46.5 million, followed by Minnesota with 43.5 million; Arkansas with 27.0 million; Virginia with 24.0 million; Missouri with 22.0 million; California with 17.5 million; and Indiana with 13.5 million. These states accounted for more than 71% of the turkeys produced in the United States during 1999. CORN STOCKS CONTINUES DECLINE North Carolina corn stocks held in all positions are at 32.1 million bushels, down 9% from December 1998. Corn held in on-farm positions are at 18 million bushels. This is 13% above December of last year. Off-farm corn stocks are at 14.1 million bushels, down 26% from December of 1998.
