HOG NUMBERS UP
All hogs and pigs on North Carolina farms on December 1, 2003 totaled 9.9 million head, 2% below
the September 1, 2003 inventory, and 2% above the level at this time last year. The inventory consisted
of 2% more market hogs than last December, totaling 8.9 million head. Breeding stock, at 1.0 million
head, was unchanged from the precious year. North Carolina ranks 2nd nationally in the number of
hogs and pigs behind Iowa's
15.8 million head. Minnesota

N. C. RED MEAT PRODUCTION UP
UNITED STATES DOWN
Commercial red meat production in North Carolina during November 2003 totaled 186 million pounds dressed
weight, up 4% from a year earlier. Commercial red meat production includes slaughter in federally inspected and other
plants, but excludes animals slaughtered on farms. Commercial slaughter of livestock in North Carolina during Novem-
ber 2003 totaled 253 million pounds live weight, up 4% from a year earlier. Cattle slaughter, at 18.1 million pounds live
weight, was 15% below a year earlier. Calf slaughter, at 74,000 pounds live weight, was up 23% from the previous year.
Sheep and lamb slaughter, at 67,000 pounds live weight, was well above the 6,000 pounds the previous year. Hog
slaughter, at 235 million pounds live weight, was up 6% from a year earlier. The average live weight per head was:
cattle, 1,071 pounds; calves, 514 pounds; sheep and lambs, 103 pounds; and hogs, 257 pounds.
Commercial red meat production for the United States during November 2003 totaled 3.53 billion pounds dressed
weight, down 10% from the 3.91 billion pounds dressed weight produced in November 2002.
Beef production in the U.S. totaled 1.78 billion pounds dressed weight, down 18% from the previous year. Cattle
slaughter totaled 2.43 million head, down 15% from a year earlier. The average live weight decreased 24 pounds to
1,236. Veal production totaled 15.2 million pounds dressed weight, down 10% from the previous year. Calf slaughter
totaled 78,000 head, down 14% from November 2002. The average live weight increased 12 pounds to 321. Pork
production totaled 1.72 billion pounds dressed weight, up slightly from a year earlier. Hog kill totaled 8.58 million
head, down 1% from November 2002. The average live weight increased 1 pound to 269. Lamb and mutton produc-
tion, at 16.3 million pounds dressed weight, was down 8% from the previous year. Sheep slaughter totaled 236,300
head, down 13% from a year earlier. The average live weight increased 6 pounds to 138.

TURKEY INTENTIONS DOWN
Turkey growers in the 23 major producing states intend to decrease the number of birds raised by 4% in
2004. These states produced more than 99% of the turkeys raised in 2003. Intentions for the top 7 producing
States compared with 2003 are as follows: Minnesota down 4%, North Carolina down 11%, Arkansas down
2%, Missouri and Virginia each

GRAIN STORAGE CAPACITY DOWN
On December 1, 2003 there were 200 off-farm commer-
cial grain storage facilities in North Carolina with a storage
capacity of 69 million bushels, a half million bushels less
than December 1, 2002. On-farm storage capacity decreasei

SELECTED COMMODITIES
The average price received for all tobacco by North Carolina farmers in December 2003 was $1,945 per pound, up 3
cents from the previous month and 1.5 cents above a year ago. The December corn price, at $2.75 per bushel, was up
34 cents from a month earlier, but was 24 cents below a year ago. Cotton prices declined 1.1 cent in December to 65.0
cents per pound, but were 21.6 cents above a year ago. The December soybean price, at $7.22 per bushel, was up 21
cents from a month earlier and was $1.80 cents above a year ago. Peanuts, at 20.4 cents per pound, were up 1.2 cent
from the previous month, but were .3 cent below a year ago.
Prices received for all hogs in December, at $35.90 per hundredweight, were unchanged from November, but were
$5.10 above the previous year. The December average price for table eggs, at 78 cents per dozen, was down 17 cents
from a month earlier due to decreased demand following the Thanksgiving Holiday, but was up 27 cents from the
previous year.
