He is always ready to re- fine and expand his talents and his horizons as a musician, com- poser, bandleader and educator. He grew up in New Orleans as the oldest son of pianist and educa- tor Ellis Marsalis. From early childhood Branford was drawn to music. His first instrument, the clarinet, gave way to the alto and then the tenor and soprano saxophones when the teenage Branford began working in local bands. When he entered college, a growing fascination with jazz gave him the basics to obtain his first major job in Art Blakey’s legend- ary Jazz Messengers. In 1986 Branford formed his own quartet, which has long been standard-setting for other ensembles of its kind. Its most recent recording was named Best Instrumental Jazz Album in 2012. Branford does not stick to performing in the quartet only. He also gives guest performances in duets with several major pianists, in- cluding his boyhood friend Harry Connick, and the longtime pia- nist in his quartet, Joey Calderazzo. Branford’s first solo concert in San Francisco is recorded in his latest album, In My Solitude. Branford formed the Marsalis Music label in 2002, and under his direction it has recorded his own music and talented new stars such as Miguel Zenon. Branford has also shared his knowledge as an educator, teaching at Michigan State, San Francisco State and North Carolina Central Universities and conducting workshops throughout the United States and the world. His repertoire includes works by Copland, Debussy, Glazunov, Mahler, Milhaud, Vaughn Williams, Villa-Lobos and so on. Branford frequently performs with leading sym- phony orchestras including those in Chicago, Detroit, Dussel- dorf and North Carolina as well as the New York Philharmonic. Branford Marsalis has got numerous awards, but for him they are only way stations along the most fascinating and rewarding jour- ney in the world of music. 9 Copyright ОАО «ЦКБ «БИБКОМ» & ООО «Aгентство Kнига-Cервис» I.
