Notes for ELISHA WARREN HOLMES, SR: [Brøderbund WFT Vol. 5, Ed. 1, Tree #0473, Date of Import: 22 Jul, 1998] RESIDENCES: 1773- IRELAND WILKES County, Georgia BY 1796- INCOLN County, Georgia -1817MORGAN County, Georgia ABT 1817PIKE County, Mississippi Elisha Holmes, Sr., came from Morgan County, Georgia (1811) with his wife, Sally Stovall. Prior to their residence in Morgan County, Elisha and his family lived in Lincoln County. Most of his children were born in that area. In 1812 Elisha & Sarah Holmes, in company with the Stovalls, Foils, and other imigrants, came to Mississippi. They settled on Collins Creek, Pike County, Mississippi in the early part of 1800. They were the original ancestors of the extensive Holmes family in Pike County. In Mississippi, Elisha Holmes followed the profession of a blacksmith and did well with it. He reared a large family - all of whom were respected within the community. His home was located 3 miles east of the present town of Tylertown, now known as the Jap Holmes Place. He came to America as a small child with his parents. They landed in Norfolk, Virginia. Elisha owned land in both Baldwin 1 25 Mar 2010 and Lincoln County, Georgia. In Feb, 1817, he transacted several deeds in Morgan County, Georgia., in which he sold what estate he had in Georgia. On Feb 2, 1817, he sold 202 1/2 acres lying on Indian creek in the 15th District of Baldwin County for $1500 to William Faine. On the 11th he sold property in Lincoln County to Absolom Tanklsley. This land was on Soap Creek, 100 acres he had acquired from his father, John Holmes, Sr. He set out for Mississippi after the Feb. 11, 1817, land sale. Settled in Pike County on Collins creek, three miles east of Tylertown In Lincoln County, Georgia., Augusta, Elisha served juries April, 1802 and Oct., 1804. He was a member of the Goshen Baptist Church. He was brought before the church in July, 1806 for using improper language, and by Aug., 1806 was expelled for his "indifference". Elisha and Sarah sold their Morgan County, Georgia property in Feb. 1817 and moved to Collins Creek, Mississippi contemporaneously with the Magees, Stovalls, and Foils and formed Holmesville, Mississippi. It was the custom for immigrants to come in large crowds because of the unfriendliness of the Indians. It is believed they had owned 4000 acres of land in old Pike County, 3 miles east of Tylertown, Walthall County, Mississippi presently part of Walthall County and owned and operated a Water Mill on the creek. BERRIAN "BERRY" HOLMES12,13, b. 1810, Georgia14; d. 1859, Old Pike County, Mississippi14. Notes for BERRIAN "BERRY" HOLMES: Berrian was afflicted, growing to manhood strong in body but weak in mind. His parents humored him and did not require him to do manual labor. Berrian never married and was listed with his mother, Sarah, in Jesse's household of Pike County, Mississippiin 1850 Census. He was listed as 40 years of age in 1850. About 1860, while alking down the big road with many others as usual after the summer Sunday morning services had closed at the old Union Baptist Church, Berrian was carrying a stick and unyielding the road. Fred Collins riding a spirited horse, allowed his horse to get so close to Berrian that it seemed he was trying to ride over Berrian. When the horse's head passed over Berrian's shoulder, Berrian struck the horse by the side of the head with his stick. Angered Fred Collins leaped from his horse, jerked out his knife, and thought Berrian made no attempt to fight or defend himself, Fred ripped causing a great gap across Berrian's stomack. Berrian was picked up by friends and carried to a nearby house where he died the next day. Fred Collins, realising the community was aroused and fearing the mob, fled the scene at once and could not be found. He remained in hiding fro a couple of years. When he surrendereed and was tried, the bad feelings against him had subsided and he was acquitted. The Collins and Holmes lived just across the road from each other and in time all was forgiven and forgotten. Fred was much younger than Berrian. Two horses hitched on opposite sides, each going round and round, getting slower and slower, needed someone to drive them. William Holmes, his 7 25 Mar 2010 grandson and Sallie, his granddaughter would drive the team for him. William said his grandfather would look through a hole from the upper story and yell out "Drive Up, I do believe in my soul it does take the lead." They could gin two bales per day. It was packed by tramping it by feet. William Stovall Holmes had the first molasses mill in that part of the country. It was made of wood and when it would revolve you could hear it creaking for miles. Every stalk of cane had to be shucked and washed by hand, then dried before it could go through the press; the juice was cooked in a several large wash pots. William Stovall Holmes had very limited education; but could read fairly well, but was as good listenere and had a splendid memory. While he never studied Mathematics he could tell you off hand, without stopping to think, just how much a bale of cotton weighting a certain number of pounds would amount to, at such and such figures. For instance 485 lbs at 8 3/4 cents or 492 lbs at 11 1/2 cents per pound would amount to x dollars. William and Jane Holmes are buried east of Old Holmes Cemetery on Packwood property (formerly Williams S. Holmes property), in small cemetery sometimes called "Brumfield Cemetery". Notes for ISAAC BRUMFIELD: Documented in the book FIELD OF BROOM by Magee Dell Clawson. Isaac has been traditioanally known to be a brother of John Brumfield who married Margaret Kelly. His daughter Caroline was known by descendts to be a cousin of Isaac (son of our John) who married Betsy Holmes, and whose family is included in the genealogy of Book II. Yhis was one of the ways that led us to the father of our John. Isaac above was mentioned in Charles Brumfield's Will and caroline was. This along with Miss Kelly's letter seemed ample evidence.
