Aberdeen Journal, Wednesday, 1st November 1916 " THE PRESENTATION PORTRAIT" " The life-size bust portrait of the Rev. William BREBNER for forty years minister of Gilcomston Parish Church, Aberdeen, subscribed for by the members and friends of the congregation to mark their appreciation of long and faithful service, on the occasion of his retirement, has been visited by hundreds of the parishioners in the saloon of Mr. William RATTRAY, 28 Diamond Street. The presentation ceremony takes place this evening in the Church Hall." "The portrait, which has been painted by the Aberdeen artist, Mr. G. Fiddes WATT, A.R.S.A. -- who now has a large connection as a portrait painter in London and Edinburgh -- is s striking likeness of the man, and in pose and features represents his character admirably, while the artistic qualities displayed are such as have made the name of the artist famous in the ranks of Scottish painters. The head is the central object of interest in the picture, the features carefully limned and the painting accomplished in a scheme of harmonious colouring. The modified light falls on the brow, and the keen yet kindly eyes are seen to advantage, while the firm mouth has been treated in such a way that the character is brought out in a manner which could not be better expressed by the use of many words. The dark ministerial coat and the dull grey background serve to bring out the head and features more prominently. Attached to the massive gilt frame of the picture is the following inscription on a neat gilt plate: -- Presented to Rev. William BREBNER of Gilcomston Parish Church, Aberdeen, by his congregation on his retirement after a faithful ministry of forty years. November 1915." 18. James Brebner #440, b.
