There is a wealth of small-town doings about the Bremner family in the local newspapers, freely available on line at www.fultonhistory.com. Some extracts appear below. Highland Democrat Peekskill "Thirty-seven years ago next December a child was born in the hills of Aberdeenshire, who is now one of our prominent and much respected businessmen whose word is as good as his bond at any time." "William Bremner was the son of William Bremner and Annie McGregor. His mother died in 1882 and his father ten years later. His early education was all that he received in a school, for at the age of nine years, he began laboring for the farmer's of that section. He continued this work until he was 18 years of age, when he began to learn a trade. The principal industry of the neighborhood was granite cutting and naturally the young man drifted to that work. He began work with the A.A. Brown Granite Works and served his time as an apprentice." " At the age of twenty-one hearing of the good times in this country and a scarcity of good men in his trade, Mr. Bremner came to this country. His first position after his arrival was with the Quincy, Mass. Granite Works. He remained there one year and then went to Rochester. He worked there one year and in 1890 came to the Mohegan granite quarry east of this village. After a year in the quarry he concluded that there was room for another marble and granite yard in this village and began business for himself on the corner of Nelson and Central avenues, in the shop in which the late J.J. Nelson had worked the last few years of his life. Later he moved to 112 Nelson avenue, and a few years ago opened a branch yard which has now become the main yard, at Van Cortlandtville." "By strict attention to business and fair and honest dealing with his customers and satisfying them as to quality of material and workmanship. he has built up a paying business and made a name for himself in the community." "In 1892 Mr. Bremner married Jane Ross West, of this place. They have four children, two boys and two girls. They reside at Van Cortlandtville." "Mr. Bremner has been a member of Cortlandt Lodge, No. 6, IO.O.O.F., for a number of years and also of Mount Ararat Encampment, No. 9, I.O.O.F." "In politics he is a Republican on National issues, but strongly independent in local affairs. He has never held a political office." "Mr. Bremner is a member of the Second Presbyterian church of this village. He is also a member of the Endevor Society of that church and was its president for one year." 5 ----------- Highland Democrat, Peekskill, NY 01 OCT 1908 "The Evening Herald of St, John's New Foundland (sic) of July 24, says of William Bremner, of this village: "Mr. Bremner, a nephew of Lady MacGregor, is among the round trippers and is visiting St. John's for the first time. He lunched at Government House to-day. Mr. Bremner resides at a suburb of New York, forty miles from the great city." (William McGregor was the Governor of Newfoundland at the time. William Bremner had never met him, but had apparently corresponded with him.) _______ Highland Democrat, Peekskill, NY, 03 DEC 1910 "William Bremner is moving his marble yard from the location opposite Hillside cemetery gate, where it has been for some years, to the southwest corner of Locust avenue and the old Church road. Mr. Bremner and his family have already vacated their former home and taken up their abode in the house on Locust avenue, which is next to the new marble yard. Mr. Bremner's former home and yards are within the zone of Thomas Nelson's "Little Farms", which he is developing in that section. Hence the necessity of the removal." ______ Highland Democrat, Peekskill, NY, 30 NOV 1912 "Mr. and Mrs. William Bremner held a china wedding anniversary at their home, Van Cortlandtville, last Monday evening, at which time many of their friends were present. Dancing, vocal and instrumental music, including card playing were the main features of the evening. Mrs. Bremner is famous for her hospitality and she sustained her reputation in the elaborate meal which she had prepared (much enjoyed by her guests). At a very late hour the guests left for home after expressing... . good time... and wishing Mr. and Mrs. Bremner many more happy anniversaries." He married Jane W.
