HARGIS – BIRDWELL WEDDING Miss Catherine Hargis becomes bride of Walter Birdwell. The marriage of Miss Catherine Maddux Hargis, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Talmadge Dewitt Hargis, to Walter Birdwell, on Saturday afternoon, was an event of especial interest to Cookeville where the bride and groom both are popularly known. The two are members of families long prominent in their home county. The ceremony took place at the Presbyterian church at Granville, Rev. Van Smith officiating. The wedding music was given by Mrs. Judkins of Gordonsville, pianist, and Mrs. Walter Cooper, vocalist. The church altar was decorated with palm and Easter lilies and contained the lighted tapers in Cathedral candlesticks and developed the proposed color scheme of green and white. In the bridal party were the ring bearer, little Betty Katherine Reeves, the bride’s cousin. Maid of Honor was Miss Margaret Hargis, while Mrs. Herbie Shanks served as matron of honor. Lee Sadler Darwin, a life long friend of the groom was best man. Ushers were Herbie Shanks, Eugene Collier, George Shanks. The bride was beautiful in bridal gown of white satin, black crepe heavily studded with pearls. Her veil of tulle and lace was caught with orange blossoms. A shower bouquet of roses, sweet peas and lilies of the valley was carried. Miss Hargis wore orchid crepe with picture hat of the same shade. Her flowers were yellow roses with sweet peas. Mrs. Shanks was gowned in green flat crepe with lavender hat and carried lilies of the valley. Rebecca Hargis wore pink flat crepe with hat to match, her flowers were pastel shades of sweet peas. Betty Katherine Reeves wore pink crepe with pink hat and carried the ring in an Easter lily. The brides parents, Mrs. and Mrs. Hargis and the bridal party received congratulations with the bride and groom at the reception following the ceremony. Mr. and Mrs. Birdwell each received their education at TPI. Mrs. Birdwell has been teaching in Granville High School. He holds a position with a Nashville bank where they will reside. A engineer with the Federal Power Commission, he was the son of Mr. & Mrs. Frank Collier of Cookeville. A native of Cookeville, he was a graduate of University of Tennessee in 1929 with a degree in engineering. For a year he was employe with Alcoa in Canada. From 1931 39 he was employed by the War Department in Nashville as an engineer. He was president of the board of the Marvin Methodist Church, Four Corners, MD. Mrs. Collier died Saturday October 1, 1988 in Broonell Presbyterian Home in Broomell, PA. A native of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Talmadge Dewitt Hargis and Ola Maddux Hargis. Mrs. Collier attended Tennessee Tech and was graduated from the University of Tennessee. She taught school in Jackson County and Putnam County for 10 years before moving to MD where she taught Economics for 35 years in Prince George County where she retired. She was a member of First Methodist Church in Cookeville, DAR and AAUW. Her family includes 1 daughter, Betty Toner of Bryn Mayr, PA; 1 sisters, Mrs. W. G. Birdwell, Carthage; 4 grandsons, Thomas D. Collier, Oak Ridge, Wm. L. Collier of Knoxville, Daniel F. Toner, Jr., of Vienna, Austria, and James E. Toner of Bryn Mawr, PA. The daughter of Tol and Nancy Pearl Jones Gist, Mrs. Draper was born in KY on Nov. 7. 1906. A member of the Free State Church of Christ, Mrs. Draper was a former employee of the Twin Lakes Telephone Cooperative Corp. and a retired school teacher. Mr. Maddux is a veteran of WWII, and retired art director for GENESCO. He was a gifted artist and founding member and past president of the Tennessee Water Color Society. He studied with Irving Shapiro, Murry Wentworth, Larry Webster, Don Stone, and Charles Reid. In 1969, Mr. Maddux and wife Ann traveled the world, compiling photos and sketches to be used in future works. He was honored in 1898 by the Society's presentation of an award given in his name. Mr. Maddux was among the first to attain 'Artist Membership', a status achieved by those whose works are repetitively juried into competitive exhibition. His paintings, which received numerous awards, can be found in private, corporate, and public collections nationally and internationally. He was a long time associate of the American Water Color Society, and a member of the Southern Water Color Society. In January 1984 Mr. Maddux became a member of the Nashville calligraphers Guild. As a result of his contribution as a teacher and mentor to all the members, he was given a life time membership 11 years later honoring his 80th birthday. His final two calligraphic works of art will be exhibited at the Centennial Arts Center during the month of November, 1999. This show will be dedicate to his memory.
