HARGIS – BIRDWELL WEDDING
Miss Catherine Hargis becomes bride of Walter Birdwell.
The marriage of Miss Catherine Maddux Hargis, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Talmadge Dewitt Hargis, to Walter Birdwell, on Saturday
afternoon, was an event of especial interest to Cookeville where the bride and groom both are popularly known. The two are members of
families long prominent in their home county. The ceremony took place at the Presbyterian church at Granville, Rev. Van Smith officiating.
The wedding music was given by Mrs. Judkins of Gordonsville, pianist, and Mrs. Walter Cooper, vocalist. The church altar was decorated
with palm and Easter lilies and contained the lighted tapers in Cathedral candlesticks and developed the proposed color scheme of green and
white. In the bridal party were the ring bearer, little Betty Katherine Reeves, the bride’s cousin. Maid of Honor was Miss Margaret Hargis,
while Mrs. Herbie Shanks served as matron of honor. Lee Sadler Darwin, a life long friend of the groom was best man. Ushers were Herbie
Shanks, Eugene Collier, George Shanks. The bride was beautiful in bridal gown of white satin, black crepe heavily studded with pearls. Her
veil of tulle and lace was caught with orange blossoms. A shower bouquet of roses, sweet peas and lilies of the valley was carried. Miss
Hargis wore orchid crepe with picture hat of the same shade. Her flowers were yellow roses with sweet peas.
Mrs. Shanks was gowned in green flat crepe with lavender hat and carried lilies of the valley.
Rebecca Hargis wore pink flat crepe with hat to match, her flowers were pastel shades of sweet peas. Betty Katherine Reeves wore pink crepe
with pink hat and carried the ring in an Easter lily.
The brides parents, Mrs. and Mrs. Hargis and the bridal party received congratulations with the bride and groom at the reception following
the ceremony.
Mr. and Mrs. Birdwell each received their education at TPI. Mrs. Birdwell has been teaching in Granville High School. He holds a position
with a Nashville bank where they will reside.
The bride’s younger sister Rebecca Hargis was junior maid of honor.

conveyed to Carthage United Methodist Church on Thursday, February 16, 1995 to lie in state from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at which time
services will be held at 3 p.m. conducted by Bro. Ed Spiva.
Interment Ridgewood Cemetery in Carthage, TN. The family will receive friends on Thursday at the Church’s Religious and Social Building

Funeral services for Frank Eugene Collier, 45, who died from a heart attack on the Argyle Golf Course at Silver Springs, MD, last Friday,
were held Monday afternoon. Services were at the Methodist Church with the Rev. Thornton Fowler officiating. Interment was in
Cookeville City Cemetery.
A engineer with the Federal Power Commission, he was the son of Mr. & Mrs. Frank Collier of Cookeville.
A native of Cookeville, he was a graduate of University of Tennessee in 1929 with a degree in engineering. For a year he was employe with
Alcoa in Canada. From 1931 39 he was employed by the War Department in Nashville as an engineer.
He was president of the board of the Marvin Methodist Church, Four Corners, MD.
Survivors besides his parents, includes his wife, Mrs. Marguerite Hargis Collier; 1 daughter, Betty Jean Collier, and a son, Frank Dewitt
Collier, all of Silver Springs, MD.

Funeral services for Marguerite Hargis Collier, 83, will be tomorrow October 5 at 11:00 in the chapel of Hooper Huddleston Funeral Home.

Mrs. Collier died Saturday October 1, 1988 in Broonell Presbyterian Home in Broomell, PA.
A native of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Talmadge Dewitt Hargis and Ola Maddux Hargis.
Mrs. Collier attended Tennessee Tech and was graduated from the University of Tennessee. She taught school in Jackson County and
Putnam County for 10 years before moving to MD where she taught Economics for 35 years in Prince George County where she retired. She
was a member of First Methodist Church in Cookeville, DAR and AAUW.
Her family includes 1 daughter, Betty Toner of Bryn Mayr, PA; 1 sisters, Mrs. W. G. Birdwell, Carthage; 4 grandsons, Thomas D. Collier,
Oak Ridge, Wm. L. Collier of Knoxville, Daniel F. Toner, Jr., of Vienna, Austria, and James E. Toner of Bryn Mawr, PA.
Mrs. Collier was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Eugene Collier.

GAINESBORO – Funeral services for Mrs. Lucille Gist Draper, 94, of Gainesboro, will be held at the free State Church of Christ in Jackson
County at 1 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 5, 2001, with burial to follow in Granville Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Anderson Funeral Home today from 2 to 8 p.m. and after 11 a.m. on Monday.
Mrs. Draper died at her residence in the Free State community of Jackson County on Saturday morning, Nov. 3, 2001.
The daughter of Tol and Nancy Pearl Jones Gist, Mrs. Draper was born in KY on Nov. 7. 1906.
A member of the Free State Church of Christ, Mrs. Draper was a former employee of the Twin Lakes Telephone Cooperative Corp. and a
retired school teacher.
Her family includes a granddaughter and her husband, Jeanette and Larry Michael “Mike” Turner; a great granddaughter, Jennifer Brown,
all of Gainesboro, and a great great granddaughter, Delaney Brown.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Draper; a daughter, Jean Draper Maddux; a brother, three sisters
and a grandson, Don Maddux.
Bros. Jann Cupp and Randy Bybee will officiate at the services.

Mrs. Ola Hargis, 78, wife of T. D. Hargis, prominent Granville family, died in Alexandria nursing home Thursday morning after a long
illness.
Mrs. Hargis was born and reared at Granville, a daughter of the late George R. and Maggie Richmond Maddux. She had spent her entire life
in Granville where she was well known. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, a devoted Christian lady; interested in the religious
and civic life of her community, where she was loved and held in high esteem.
Survivors are her husband; 3 daughters, Mrs. Eugene Collier, Silver Springs, Md, Mrs. W. G. Birdwell, sr., Carthage, Mrs. Ralph Lucas,
Lebanon; a sister, Mrs. H. J. Shanks, Cookeville; 2 brothers, Sid Maddux, Nashville, and Guy Maddux, Granville; 5 grandchildren and 3
great grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 Friday at the Granville Presbyterian Church by Rev. Andrew Albert and Rev. Ira Sadler. Burial was

Mr. T. D. Hargis, prominent Granville farmer, died Monday in Jackson County Hospital in Gainesboro after an extended illness. He was 87.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at the Granville Presbyterian Church by Bro. Andrew Albert. Interment was in
Granville Cemetery with Masonic rites.
A native of Jackson County, he was the son of J. S. and Elizabeth Montgomery Hargis. He was a farmer, livestock trader, and for 20 years
was the Jackson County Hwy. Commissioner. He was a Mason and a member of the Presbyterian Church and served as an elder for 60 years.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Charlie Shanks Hargis, Granville, Granville; 3 daughters, Mrs. Eugene Collier, silver Springs, MD, Mrs.
Walter Glen Birdwell Sr., Carthage and Mrs. Ralph Lucas, Lebanon, a step daughter, Miss Virginia Foutch, Granville; 5 grandchildren and
10 great grandchildren.
His first wife, Mrs. Ola Maddux Hargis preceded him in death in 1959.

MADDUX A. Leathers Age 84. Monday, October 25, 1999, at Baptist Hospital. Native of Nashville, TN. Survived by wife, Ann
McDaniel Maddux; three nieces, four nephews. Mr. Maddux is a veteran of WWII, and retired art director for GENESCO.
He was a gifted artist and founding member and past president of the Tennessee Water Color Society. He studied with Irving Shapiro, Murry
Wentworth, Larry Webster, Don Stone, and Charles Reid. In 1969, Mr. Maddux and wife Ann traveled the world, compiling photos and
sketches to be used in future works. He was honored in 1898 by the Society's presentation of an award given in his name.
Mr. Maddux was among the first to attain 'Artist Membership', a status achieved by those whose works are repetitively juried into competitive
exhibition. His paintings, which received numerous awards, can be found in private, corporate, and public collections nationally and
internationally. He was a long time associate of the American Water Color Society, and a member of the Southern Water Color Society.
In January 1984 Mr. Maddux became a member of the Nashville calligraphers Guild. As a result of his contribution as a teacher and mentor
to all the members, he was given a life time membership 11 years later honoring his 80th birthday.
His final two calligraphic works of art will be exhibited at the Centennial Arts Center during the month of November, 1999. This show will
be dedicate to his memory. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at Woodmont Hills Church of Christ, 3710 Franklin Road,
conducted by Rubel Shelly and Phillip E. Morrison. Interment Beechwood Cemetery, Cornersville, TN. Memorials may be made to the

Mrs. Maddux died Wednesday in Donelson Hospital following a brief illness.
A native of Goodletsville, she was a daughter of the late William Hart and Sarah Shaw Ferrell. She attended St. Cecelia School.
Mr. Maddux was Sid Maddux, an employee of Standard Oil Company, until in 1964.
She was a member of Pennington United Methodist Church and was active in the PTA and many charity organizations.
Surviving are 4 sons, Robert Noel Maddux, Walter P. Maddux Sr., and A. Leathers Maddux, all of Nashville, and William Redmon Maddux
of Miami, FL; 8 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren.

George R. Maddux Dies at Granville.
George R. Maddux, prominent farmer, died after a short illness at his home in Granville Thursday afternoon. His children were with him at
the time of his passing to the great beyond.
Funeral services were conducted at the Presbyterian church Friday afternoon by Rev. Van Smith, assisted by S.A.D. Smith, after which his
remains were laid to rest in the Richmond cemetery on Flynn’s Creek, besides his wife who preceded him in death 33 year. He is survived by
the following children, Mrs. T. D. Hargis, of Granville, Mrs. H. J. Shanks of Cookeville, John Walter Maddux of Lewistown, Montana, Sid
T. Maddux of Nashville, and Guy R. Maddux of Granville; 13 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
Mr. Maddux married Miss Maggie L. Richmond more than 50 years ago. In his early life, Mr. Maddux was a member of the County Court
and Sheriff of Jackson County.
He was a member of the strictest integrity, who believed in doing the right thing at all times. His life of service to his fellow man will be
greatly missed in the section where he lived.

Guy R. Maddux, age 72, passed away suddenly Friday Dec. 20 at his home in the Granville community. He was a native of Jackson County.
Mr. Maddux was the son of the late George Maddux and Margaret Richmond Maddux. He was first married to Ruth McDonald Maddux who
preceded him in death. He later married Laura Cumby Maddux, who survives.
He is also survived by 1 daughter, Mrs. Jack Meadows of Gainesboro; 1 son, Donald Maddux of Gainesboro; 3 grandchildren of Gainesboro;
1 sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Shanks of Cookeville; 1 brother, St. T. Maddux of Nashville, several other relatives and a host of friends. One
brother, Walter Maddux and 1 sister, Mrs. T. D. Hargis are deceased.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Church for several years, serving as an elder for the church for a good many years.
He was a vet4eran of WWI, a Mason, a retired livestock dealer and farmer and a civic leader in the community.
Services were conducted Sunday Dec. 22 at the Granville Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Ira Sadler and Andrew Albert with burial in the
Granville Cemetery.

A native of Jackson County, Mr. Maddux was the son of the late George and Margaret Richmond Maddux of Granville. He had lived in
Montana for more than 40 years.
Survivors are his wife, the former Miss Leah Thomas of Butte, MT; 2 children, George Maddux and Mrs. Tommy (Ilene) Green and 3
