Avila has experienced a tremendous expansion since last school year. Our biggest and most exciting occurrence was the changing ofour name from Avila College to Avila University. Our campus and the community that we serve are enthusiastic about the name change and have embraced it with vigor. AU is as committed now as it has ever been to providing for our student-athletes. This support comes in a variety ofways. Obvious examples ofsupport are physical improvements. These improvements include therecent expansion of the Mabee Field house which included new locker rooms, a new training room, a multi-purpose room, a new softball/baseball batting cage, an expansive weight room, and a new playing surface for our volleyball and basketball teams. Our baseball field received a beautiful new Bermuda grass infield and we have built a new multi-purpose practice facility that will be utilized by our soccer and football teams. These arejust a few examples ofthe support our student-athletes are receiving. An additional type ofsupport our students deserve is yours! Your involvement by regular attendance at competitions, vocal encouragement, and good sportsmanship are easy ways you can be supportive ofour student-athletes. Thank you for your interest in Avila Athletics and I look forward to seeing you at many more events this year. GO EAGLES! Under the direction ofnew head coach Paul McNally, the Eagles will mix several returnees with a host of newcomers in an effort to improve upon last year’s 3-1 1 season mark. McNally’s main concern will be developing a goalkeeper from his returnees and new recruits. New assistant coach Tracy Friedech manned the Eagle keeper spot for 4 years before graduating last spring. On defense. McNallymust replace team captain Chrissy Means and Brooke Hathaway. That task will fall to returning players Lindsay May (sr. Peculiar, MO) and Sara Beckley (sr. St. Louis, MO) with freshmen Zoe Shaffer (fr. Overland Park, KS) and Amie Granillo (fr. Kansas City, MO) expected to contribute as well. The midfield positions appears to be the Eagles strong suit this year as McNally will combine returners Rebecca Reed (sr. Jenks, OK), Lindsay Todd (sr. Lee's Summit, MO), and Nicole Sowders (soph. Albuquerque, NM) with transfer Kristen Kelley (soph. Lee’s Summit, MO) and freshmen Jessica Collins (Overland Park, KS) . Laura Wilkerson (jr. Grandview, MO) and freshmen Cassie Tremonti (Roeland Park, KS) look to lead the Eagles offensive attack from the forward positions. While McNally feels that the combination ofa new coach and many new players maycause the Eagles to take some time to gel together, he feels confident in the talent level and athleticism ofhis squad. “1 expect a significantly higher level ofplay as the season progresses,” commented McNally. “It is our hope to improve quickly and surprise some opponents throughout the season.” Head Coach Paul McNally Soccer coaching veteran Paul McNally enters his first year at the helm ofthe Avila University women’s soccer program. McNally, a native ofSomerset, NJ, has over 30 years ofhigh school and college coaching experience and brings a wealth ofknowledge to the Lady Eagle team. Currently the girls’ soccer coach at Raymore-Peculiar High School, McNally’s resume includes coaching stops at O'Hara High School (Kansas City), Raytown High School, St Mary College (Leavenworth, KS) and Blue Springs High School. He served as the men’s and women’s soccer coach at the University of Asila Women's SoccerCoachingStaff (fromLeft)HeadCoachPaulMcNally,Assistant Missouri-Rolla for 8 seasons as well. Olathe, KS Call: 816-941-2500 Volleyball Season Outlook The Avila University women’s volleyball team will share one thing in common with most HAAC oftheir fellow Heart ofAmerica Conference schools this season. Six schools will enter the 2002-2003 volleyball season with new head coaches. Manning the helm at Avila will be Brett Talcott. Coach Talcott, a native ofOlathe, KS and former standout at Graceland College, enters his first season as a college head coach. The Eagles who managed a 10lh place conference finish last season look to improve upon that mark with a balance ofnew and returning players. Avila returns 5 starters from last season’s squad including team kills leader Stephanie Bass, an All-Conference Honorable Mention selection and team dig leader Kristy Crawford. Coach Talcott will count on some immediate assistance from his first-ever recruiting class who he feels is both athletic and talented. Freshmen Whitney Abramson (Blue Springs South HS) and Jennifer Pike (Omaha, NE) are set to battle for the all-important setter position as Talcott will look to replace graduated setter Alana Groom. 5’1 1” Sarah Davis (Sedalia, MO) and 5' I l” sopho- more Jamie Richardson, a transfer from Longview Community College will provide the Eagles with some size and athleticism at the middle and outside hitter positions. The Heart ofAmerica Conference race may be something ofa mystery early on as Benedictine, William Jewell, Central Methodist, Lindenwood, and Culver-Stockton all join Avila as having new head coaches. According to Coach Talcott, “Graceland and Lindenwood look to be the early favorites based on last year’s success, but with all the new coaches, the order offinish is really up in the air this year.” Head Coach Brett Talcott Brett Talcott enters his first season as head coach ofthe Avila University women’s volleyball program. Talcott attended Graceland University and received a bachelor’s degree in business administration and accounting in 1999. A outstanding athlete, Talcott was a 4 year mem- ber ofthe Graceland men’s volleyball team which won the NA1A National Championship in 1998 and finished as National Runner Up in 1999. He is still active in competitive volleyball playing with Kansas City’s USA Volleyball regional team. Talcott’s coaching career includes stints as the Graceland University junior varsity coach from 1997 to 1999 and the assistant varsity coach at Olathe East High School in 2001 He has also . found success at the club volleyball level, leading the Mid America Volleyball Club team to two National Tournament appearances. MO - 1 Men’s Soccer 2002 Season Outlook The Avila University men’s soccer team enters the 2002 season with a great deal ofantici- pation. Coming offa solid 12-3-2 record during the 2001 season, the Eagles expect that their senior leadership and another solid recruiting class will lead them to success in the Heart ofAmerica Conference. Fifth year head coach Patrick Phillips looks to be strong defensively with returnee Thomas Gregar (soph. Louisburg, KS) and newcomers Thomas Francis (Olathe, KS) and Jesse Rogers (Raytown, MO). The goalkeeper position is also set as senior Nick Baum (Overland Park, KS) and junior Ken Kirkendoll (Raytown, MO) will split time, giving the Eagles two viable options in the net. Offensively, senior forward Josh Englebrake (Olathe, KS) and midfielders Mike Johnson (jr. Fee’s Summit, MO), Derick Veatch (jr. Blue Springs, MO), and Jake Phillips (jr. Stilwell, KS) are expected to help the Eagles put points on the board regularly. The Eagles face a difficult schedule this season. Not only facing Heart ofAmerica Conference favorites Lindenwood University (St. Charles, MO) and Baker University (Baldwin City, KS), Avila will also square offagainst NAIA Region 4 power Columbia College (Columbia, MO), Park University (Parkville, MO), and NCAA Division 11 Missouri-Rolla (Rolla, MO) in non-conference action. With good health and solid play. Coach Phillips expects his Eagles to be in the hunt for a successful season. An avid supporter ofyouth soccer, Phillips currently also coaches with the Kansas City Legend Boys’ Soccer Club. Success has followed Phillips to Avila as well, as the Eagles captured the 1999 Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Championship and second in the NAIA Region 4 Championships.
