The project evolved from there. The editors gratefully acknowledge the many people and insti- tutes that made this project possible. Philip Goff and the Center for the Study of Religion and American Culture at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis provided support with funding from the Lilly Endowment for a group of early career scholars to begin thinking about how their research on religion intersected across space and time. In 2012, many of those scholars, joined by a handful of others, met at the cam- pus of Southern Methodist University (SMU) to share drafts of the essays that appear here. SMU’s Center for Presidential History and especially its director Jeffrey A. Engel were excellent hosts and provided substantial support. The conference also received significant support from the John C. Danforth Center on Religion and Politics at Washington University in St. Louis and its director R. Marie Griffith. At Oxford University Press, we are grateful to Theo Calderara, Gina Chung, and their team for their countless contributions to this volume. Finally, we dedicate this book to Paul Harvey, Amanda Porterfield, and Philip Goff, who trained a genera- tion of Young Scholars in American Religion to see the relevance of their research for the modern world.
