TheFacultyofArts andScienceisthelargestacademicunitattheUniversityofTor- onto.Through30departmentsintheSciences, HumanitiesandSocialSciences, our Commerceand FinanceProgram,andthenewDivision oftheEnvironmentandthe Colleges, studentshaveaccesstoover300programsand2,000courses,taughtby someofthefinestscholarsinNorthAmerica.ThesevencollegesontheSt.George CampusofferstudentsahomebaseinthisrichanddiverseFaculty. Thebeginningofanewacademicyearisalwaysanexcitingtime.Twonewdevelop- mentsin thecurriculumoftheFacultypromisetomakethisyearespeciallystimulat- ingandchallenging. OneistheintroductionofCurriculumRenewal. Broadeningthestudentexperience throughexpandingthebreadthrequirements,andenhancingtherigourofdegreepro- gramsbyincreasingtherequirednumberofupperlevelcourses,aretwoexamplesof thechanges underCurriculumRenewal. ThesecondnewdevelopmentistheintroductionoftheDivisionoftheEnvironment. TheDivisionwillprovideaninnovative,broad-basedapproachtoenvironmentaledu- cationwhileallowing studentstofocusonaparticulardiscipline. Thereis,ofcourse,moretoaUniversityeducationthanacademicstudies.Iencourage all studentstotakepartinthewealthofextra-curricularopportunitiesavailable throughtheColleges,theFacultyandtheUniversity.Therearemanyfacultyandstaff who arecommittedtomakingyourundergraduateexperiencerewarding,bothaca- demicallyandpersonally. Studentsinterested inpursuing aBachelorofCommerce(B.Com.) degree areurgedto study SectionTHREEcarefully;this sectioncontainsalltheinformation ontherequirementsstudent mustfulfilinordertoreceiveaoneofthesefourdegrees.
