BROWN ELEMENTARY MISSION STATEMENT
Our mission is to prepare tomorrow’s leaders for academic success by providing a
rigorous technology integrated curriculum, which develops the whole child and fosters a
positive self-concept, creativity, self-discipline, values and life skills.
BROWN ELEMENTARY VISION STATEMENT
The vision of William H. Brown STEM School is to equip our students with the tools they
need to succeed technologically, economically, and culturally for a global community.
Brown students will achieve personal success and become a responsible and productive
citizen.
SCHOOL LEADERSHIP
The administration is charged with the organization, supervision, administration and
inspiration of the school community. The administration shall establish and enforce
such regulations, not contrary to the Rules of the Board of Education, the Student Code
of Conduct, or the regulations of the Chicago Board of Education, as in their judgment
may be necessary for the successful conduct of Brown STEM.
ACTS OF MISCONDUCT
All staff members are required to read information on the Acts of Misconduct as it relates
to all Board of Education employees. This includes inappropriate and disrupting
behaviors in the classroom, in the school, on the school grounds, assigned work location,
or while attending school functions, such as the following:
● Negligent supervision of students
● Leaving the classroom, duty assignment or school without permission
● Failure to submit lesson plans and other reports as directed by the principal or in
a timely manner
● Use of inappropriate language and gestures in front of students
● Excessive tardiness or absences
● Failure to return to work on time after breaks, lunch etc. without prior
authorization to extend the time
NOTE: VIOLATIONS OF ACTS OF MISCONDUCT CAN RESULT IN DISCIPLINARY
ACTION INCLUDING SUSPENSION WITHOUT PAY.

FACULTY/STAFF EXPECTATIONS (MTSS Tier 1)
Transitions
Continuously improve your teaching practices.
CLASSROOM TEACHERS
Teachers shall take charge of the class assigned to them. You are responsible for the
instruction, progress and discipline of your classes, and shall devote yourself exclusively
to these duties during school hours. Responsibilities shall include but not be limited to
the following categories: instructional planning, use of appropriate instructional
methods, evidence of competence in subject matter taught or services provided, and
monitoring of student progress. Teachers shall render assistance in the educational
program in the school-wide environment, demonstrate effective classroom management
and promote positive relationships with pupils, staff and parents.
NON-CLASSROOM TEACHERS
Teachers shall assume responsibilities assigned to them by the administration. You shall
be responsible for using your professional training and skills to support the instructional
program. You shall devote yourself exclusively to these duties during school hours.
These responsibilities shall be direct and/or indirect services to students, relate to the
specific position to which you are assigned, support the instructional program, and
facilitate operation of the school. Teachers shall render assistance in the educational
program in the school-wide environment, demonstrate effective classroom management
and promote positive relationships with pupils, staff and parents.
EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT PERSONNEL
Brown support staff shall take charge of the duties and responsibilities assigned to them
by the principal or her designee. ESP’s shall perform such duties as directed by the
administration. Such may include, but are not limited to, supporting the instructional
program, assisting in the supervision of students, providing tutorial services, and
monitoring halls, lunchroom and other designated areas.
MAIN OFFICE PROCEDURES
All office staff personnel, permanent or temporary, are expected to be professional at all
times and adhere to following Main Office procedures:
● Incoming calls must be answered by the third ring. Personal calls for staff
members other than office personnel will be forwarded to classrooms only in
cases of emergencies. Otherwise, messages will be placed in the teacher’s
mailbox.

● Office staff will assist and ascertain reasons for use of the office telephone by
students. Under no circumstances will students be permitted to dial or use
telephone without supervision of office staff.
● Before transferring a call to the principal, find out who is calling, the nature of
the call, and offer assistance to the caller, if possible.
● When the principal is holding conferences of any type-hold all calls and take
messages, unless otherwise notified or in cases of emergency.
● When a parent, guardian or visitor requests to see teacher or staff member,
ascertain the nature of the visit, whether or not the teacher scheduled the visit.
Notify the teacher or staff member before issuing a pass. Parent conferences
are scheduled between 7:00 a.m. and 7:15 a.m., during teacher’s prep time,
before or after school.
● All visitors must sign the visitor log when arriving at Brown School. It is the
responsibility of the office staff and security to make sure that visitors sign in
and receives a visitor’s pass.
● Early Dismissal Notify the classroom teacher of the early dismissal. It is the
responsibility of the office staff to check that the Early Dismissal Book is filled
out correctly before releasing any child.
Other responsibilities:
● Keep the office free of clutter to present a well-kept and welcoming
appearance to visitors; this includes the front counter, floors and desks.
● Receive all packages, sign the receipt log as the person who accepted the
package, place it behind the counter and notify the principal or assistant
principal that packages have arrived. Do not disseminate any packages to
faculty until they are received first by administration.
● Ensure all teachers have entered attendance by 7:45 a.m. Notify the teacher
immediately if he/she has not.
There will be bi-weekly staff meetings for office staff.
ABSENCE PROCEDURES
Attendance (Employee)
Teachers, your attendance is crucial for the success of our students. Reaching Level 1+
status as a school will require our expert teachers in place as much as possible.
However, emergencies and illnesses arise. Please follow the below procedure when you
are going to be absent:
When absent, there should be detailed lesson plans left for the substitute teacher.
Teachers who know they will be absent the day before are to inform the principal, and
follow the new procedures for securing a substitute teacher via the Aesop. In addition, if
you know you will be absent the next day, please inform the Main Office by 1:00 P.M. If
we do not hear from you, we will assume you will be returning to work.

If for some reason you must be absent:
First, report to Aesop Sub Center and enter into www.timekeeper.cps.edu as early as
possible before 6:00 a.m. Staff is expected to maintain a 95% attendance rate. Second,,
call the school office (773-534-7250) by 6:30 a.m. and leave a message with the person
answering the phone or on the voice mail. By 1:00 p.m. on the day of absence, let the
school know if you will be returning the next day. Board of Education rules mandate
that teachers notify the school on the day of absence if you plan to return to school the
next day. Failure to do so may result in a substitute being retained in the teacher’s
position. Due to the difficulties we experience in obtaining quality substitutes, if you
know you will be absent, please notify the school clerk or an administrator.
Bus aides and CWA’s are to call sub center, then call the school and leave an informative
message on the answering service.
Half days are extremely difficult to accommodate. It will normally take some
cooperation from your colleagues. Please keep this in mind when requesting them. With
that being said, a day with you here is better than a day without you.
Absences due to last minute illness
When you will be absent due to last minute illness, please observe the following:
1. Put in for a substitute in AESOP immediately.
2. Email sub plans in directly to the principal and copy school clerk on email
([email protected], [email protected]).
3. Call the principal directly (773)534-7250 between the hours of 6:30am and 7:15am to
report absence.
4. Provide a doctor’s note when applicable.
Absences due to family emergency
Please observe the same procedures as last minute illnesses.
Absences due to other emergencies
If you are absent due to other emergencies (car towed, garage door will not open, etc.)
any and all documentation of the situation is due to the principal whenever possible
(repair receipts, etc.)
If you are out because of an emergency that renders you unable to turn in sub plans,
emergency plans that are on file for you will be used. Three days of emergency lesson
plans are due to the office by Friday of the first week of school. After this date, each

time that emergency lesson plans are used, it is your responsibility to replenish them so
that we always have three days of plans.
PERSONAL DAY POLICY
The administrator approves all personal days PRIOR to it being used a benefit day. The
Administrator will not approve any personal days that occur within the day before or
after a holiday. Just because you submit for a personal day does not mean you are
automatically approved. It is contingent upon staff coverage for the particular day
requested.
Please ensure that when you use a benefit day, you use the right one for its intended
purpose. For example, if you request a personal business day to attend a baseball game,
and your request is granted, have fun at the game. If you call in sick, and the principal is
provided evidence that you went to a ball game, not only will you not get paid for that
day but you will also be subject to disciplinary action under Attendance Abuse. Do not
play with this!
Additionally, the district is not allowing the daisy chaining of personal days/sick days for
out of town purposes, extended vacation, etc. You may request time off for an extended
period of time in circumstances that are unique (family reunion, etc), but you will not be
paid for any days past your personal day allotment.

FACULTY/ STAFF WORK DAY
Attendance impacts continuity of instruction and subsequently student achievement. It
is extremely important that all faculty and staff maintain good attendance and report to
work on time.
● All staff members must swipe in when entering the building and out when leaving
the building.
● All faculty members must be ready to receive students at 7:30 a.m.
Tuesday-Thursday and at 7:45 am Monday and Friday. Therefore, all copying,
parent conferences, etc. should be completed prior to students' arrival time,
during planning periods, or after school.
● In cases of emergency, office personnel must be notified and provisions made for
supervision of students. Appointments (i.e. doctor, dentist, etc.) should be
scheduled after 2:30 pm.
● All staff members are expected to remain on campus until 2:30 pm and swipe out
upon departure. Permission to leave early will be granted by the administration
only in cases of emergency. Teachers/staff needing to leave campus at any time
prior to regular dismissal time must notify administration as soon as possible.
Check your mailbox/email at least three times daily (first thing in the morning, before
lunch and before leaving). Respond to messages within 24 hours of receipt.
All students will be escorted to lockers by ESP staff and should be greeted at the
classroom door by teachers so that instruction may begin promptly at 7:30 am.
DAILY MORNING OPENING ACTIVITIES
1. Students are to be picked up from the designated location on time so that breakfast
can begin by 7:30 am Tuesday-Thursday and 7:45 am on Mondays and Fridays.
Breakfast will be in the classrooms.
2. Students are to immediately remove all outerwear and materials from their book bags
and store them in the lockers according to teachers’ procedures.
3. If it is observed that a student has candy, gum or food, outside of food for lunch,
immediately confiscate it.
4. Morning Exercise-Teachers must be in their classrooms leading and directing students
during the morning exercises; no other activity should be occurring.
Teachers and students should stand and do the following:

5. Proceed to carry out well organized, established classroom routines
DISMISSAL PROCEDURES
All students must be dismissed quickly and quietly at the same time using the designed
exit doors. Teachers are to position themselves in the hallway to supervise students
using lockers. Students are to return to the classroom and wait for the dismissal bell
before entering the hallway. No student is to be detained after school without the
guardian’s prior knowledge and consent. Teachers are required to escort students to the
designed exit door at all dismissals. Teachers are required to remain at the exit door until
all of the students have cleared the door area. Do not allow any students to leave your
line. Teachers are responsible for the discipline of their students who re-enter the
building after dismissal.
a. If students are scheduled to meet after school for special activity, the
person requesting the student must make arrangements for an adult to pick
up the student up at the main exit after the student’s dismissal, and must
obtain consent from the classroom teacher for the student to participate in
the special activity.
b. Staff should not create a situation where a student has to search for
him/her at the close of the day. Avoid inviting a student(s) to come to your
room after school to assist you in the classroom. Notify the office if a child,
with the consent of the guardian and classroom teacher, is in your
classroom after dismissal.
c. At the end of the day, leave the classroom clear of excessive debris on the
floor, windows closed, and computer monitors off.
d. Do not leave groups of students in the room while dismissing the class. If
you wish to have a few students remain, walk them to the door with you.
Students must be under supervisions at all times.
1. LAST PERIOD RESOURCE CLASSES
Students attending Labs, Art, and Gym classes scheduled during the last period of
the day will return to their classroom to be dismissed by their assigned teacher.
