We are now heir to an informing knowledge base emerging from clinical discernments and empirical findings. Contributions to this base, however, have been fueled essentially by the biological and behavioral sciences. Influence of the arts and humanities has tended to be peripheral. Dr. Bertman realized this impoverishment and void about two decades ago. Since then, in vari- ous national and international fora, she has instructed and sensitized the thanatological community to the pertinence and richness of materials available through visual and literary images. The result has been a boon for patient, death educator, and clinician. This book represents an advancing systematic exposition of her think- ing and endeavors in the field. With astuteness and resourcefulness, she has underscored how the arts can provide not only a vital adjunct in teaching and counseling for the thanatologist but also serve as an avenue for self-discovery. She is furnishing us with an educational and therapeu- tic took of tremendous evocative power for the death educator and coun- selor in forwarding catharsis and self-knowledge. Findings issuing from the various populations she describes in the book also suggest possibilities for developing a more relevant orientation toward contemporary death and grief. Dr. Bertman is a superb teacher whose book is germane not only for the death educator and counselor but for all health-care givers in deepen- ing their perceptions of the human condition and personal destiny. Its contribution is summed-up in her own poetic statement-the arts cannot stay the flights of the birds of sorrow but they can help us to better appreciate and endure them.
