Colonel Percy Harrison Fawcett was born in 1867 in Devon, England. At the age ofnineteen*lie was given a commission in the Royal Artillery. He served'in Ceylon for several years where he met and married his wife. Later he performed secret service work in North Africa. Fawcett found himselfbored with Army life and learned the art ofsurveying, hoping to land a more interesting job. Thenin 1906 came the offerto join the RoyalGeographical Society: his ticket to adventure. It was summer 1925 when Colonel Percy Fawcett passed a final message to his wife. "You need have no fear of any failure," he wrote before setting off deeper into the Mato Grosso region of the Amazon jungle on his quest to discover a fabled lost city of gold. He never found it.
