Explaining Renewable Energy This undergraduate text aimed primarily at high schoolers and lower-level undergraduates focuses on explaining how the vari- ous forms of renewable energy work and the current ongo- ing research. It includes sections on non-scientific aspects that should be considered such as the availability of resources. A final chapter covers methods of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Renewable energy is currently on everyone’s mind in the con- text of climate change. This text provides students with an intro- duction to the science behind the various types of renewable energy, enabling them to access review literature in the field and options that should be considered when selecting methods. It has been known for over 25 years that increasing concen- trations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere due to human activity are the main cause of global warming. In 1996, I was part of a team producing a Science Foundation Couse for the Open University. One book in this course (written by another academic) showed graphs of the increase in atmospheric temperature during the 20th century. Possible explanations were explored, and it was shown that the proposed alternatives to human activity as a cause were insufficient to explain the observed rise in temperature. As a solid state chemist, I have observed that conferences in this area in recent years are often dominated by research into methods of reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide, particu- larly batteries and carbon capture. I was pleased therefore to be asked to write this book. However, this only covers some of the problems that need to be tackled. For example, energy use, particularly by inhabit- ants of ‘rich’ counties, needs to be reduced. I would like to thank Jack Drever who read and com- mented on the chapter on wind power. I would also like to thank the reviewer of the first draft, who provided useful comments on the text as a whole.
