Of comparable importance is the assessment of the student’s ability to demonstrate independence of thought and increasing maturity so they can become independent researchers” (Edwards, 2014). • When originality is maintained in other types of work the same abilities are cultivated. • Applied to the roles in the aromatherapy field, these skills are imperative. © 2018 American College of Healthcare Sciences Strategies for Originality • Presenting a new piece of information • Creating a new synthesis on a topic • Bringing forward a new method, technique, application, result, or insight on a previous topic • Applying a cross-disciplinary approach to a topic that has not been used before • Using an established technique and applying it in a new area • Examining an area in a field that has not previously been researched • Testing a theory or previously published information to present a new perspective Modified from: Phillips, E., & Pugh, D. Higher education institutions make clear their guidelines for academic integrity and the consequences of violating them. • Not only does academic integrity ensure that the student enrolled in the program is receiving their education, it teaches the invaluable skills needed to cultivate originality. • Demonstrates how to maintain and value originality.
