It’s all coming unstuck! Is it even possible, under these conditions, to continue to entertain the sunny no- tion that everything is exactly as it should be in this, the best of all possible worlds? I sincerely hope so! There are, of course, the easy rationalizations of “it could always be worse” and “we ain’t dead yet”; however, few of us find them entirely satisfac- tory. But there is also the far more enticing possibility of un- derstanding how we got here and where we are going. Once we achieve it, we can briefly blame ourselves for ever having ex- pected anything different, and then move on to better things. This understanding is not easily won; for many of us, it is be- coming increasingly hard to bridge the yawning chasm be- tween the observed and the wished for. Just look! A new civil war is brewing in the US between a rainbow coalition of aggrieved minorities and the assorted scions of a vanishing breed railing at having their once glorious history erased. First to go are the heroes of the Confederacy who showed true valor in bravely defending their home states against colonialist invaders from the North (inadvertently also defending the ghastly institution of American slavery—possi- 1 bly the worst kind of slavery ever). But why stop there? The next batch of American heroes to be rubbed out using the newly patented Magic History Eraser are all those complicit in the genocide perpetuated against Na- tive Americans (once erroneously referred to as “Indians”) turning the story of “How the West Was Won” into “How the West was Raped, Tortured and Killed,” which, lacking an up- beat message, will turn out to be not quite as popular and quickly forgotten. And why should Latinos (and Latinas) ven- erate the perpetrators of the Spanish American War, or any of those who came after and are continuing to meddle in the in- ternal affairs of Latin American countries to this day? And what about that ghastly white supremacist slave-owner George Washington? Let’s rub out his name everywhere, and rename Washington, District of Columbia, to Obamaville! Speaking of District of Columbia… in the end this will all in- evitably come down to Christopher Columbus—the man guilty of starting this whole mess by accidentally “discovering” America. It is perfectly obvious that the historical accident that is “America” must be un-discovered. Easier said than done! It isn’t some small object that one can simply misplace, or mislabel, or hide under a rock. It is a civilization, and to be rendered sanitary it has to be fed through a special de-civiliz- ing machine. Is it enough to topple all the statues, blast the faces off Mount Rushmore and criminalize politically incorrect speech? Hardly! The libraries might still contain records of numerous politically incorrect utterances, such as the following classic 2 by Sir Winston Churchill: “I do not admit… that a great wrong has been done to the Red Indians of America or the black peo- ple of Australia. I do not admit that a wrong has been done to these people by the fact that a stronger race, a higher-grade race, a more worldly wise race… has come in and taken their place.” Some impressionable young person might read that and decide that efforts to promote diversity empower losers and disempower winners, causing everyone to lose, and we certainly can't have anyone thinking that! Therefore, the li- braries must be burned as well. And Churchill's monument in Washington… sorry, Obamaville… must of course be toppled. Once America has been shorn of its history, its monuments defaced and destroyed, its graves desecrated, its libraries burned and its stories forgotten, the survivors of this cata- clysm of anger and forgetting can be reassigned to one of a myriad of tiny micro-identities designed to celebrate diversity. Ideally, these micro-identities should be based not on his- torical times, places or events but on cosmetic and below-the- belt personal peculiarities and proclivities. Then those subject to identity reassignment can be relocated to safe spaces where they will be taught to express themselves in carefully scripted platitudes to avoid micro-aggressing members of some micro- identity or other. In the normal course of human affairs there are usually one or two adults on hand who keep the kindergarten class from arming itself and going on a murderous rampage. But here in the US there are no adults left because the entire political realm seems to be nearly defunct. I hesitate to call it a political 3 spectrum, because a spectrum consists of light, whereas here we have just the infrared—residual heat—plus an overpower- ing stench of death. Consider the Democrats: unable to countenance the fact that half the country (just about everyone outside the big cities) hates them and refuses to vote for them, they have con- cocted a false narrative in which their losses have been caused by “Russian hacking/meddling.” When that narrative turned out to be a tissue of lies, they proceed straight to Plan B: Trump is a fascist, everyone who supports him is a fascist, and therefore we must fight a civil war against fascism. Of the Republicans, the less said the better, except it bears pointing out that majority parties that can’t get a single thing done don’t usually remain majority parties for very long. And I'll confine my mention of other parties to a single sentence, to avoid wasting everyone's time. In short, that’s no way to run a kindergarten class. And then there is the poor hapless Trump who thought that pretending to be a politician and getting himself elected president would allow him to change things for the better: se- cure the borders, put people back to work, stop losing wars, re- build the infrastructure, fix health care, rework unfavorable trade deals, etc. But apparently he applied for the job without bothering to read the job description, even though it’s quite short. In fact, it contains just one sentence: “Promise the sun and the moon, but then preserve the status quo.” Trump is an actor who didn't know that he is an actor, who blundered onto the stage of a farce not knowing that it is a farce.
