Toward this end the museum augments, preserves, exhibits and fosters understanding of the outstanding collections of world art it holds in trust for the public and presents complementary exhibitions and programs. The Cleveland Museum of Art embraces its leadership role in collecting, scholarship, education, and community service. Established in 1975, The Greater Cleveland Choral Chapter has become the longest continually active community gospel choir in the city of Cleveland. The 50-member choir, led by Music Director Richard Smith, has been hailed by The Plain Dealer as “Powerful and joyous…. The moment the ensemble’s singers opened their mouths chills ran up the spine.” An integral part of the Cleveland Gospel music landscape, “The Chapter,” as they are known, has performed in many Cleveland venues, including: the Music Hall, Trinity Cathedral (Episcopal), The Cleveland Convention Center, Cleveland State University, The Cleveland Institute of Music and the Cleveland Museum of Art. Following its motto, “Serving God and Man Through Song,” The Chapter is involved in myriad community efforts, ranging from feeding and clothing the less fortunate to contributing funds to protect local neighborhoods from the influence of drugs. It has shared in music ministry with such luminaries as Albertina Walker and Inez Andrews, and has appeared on local television programs including Morning Exchange and the Bobby Jones’ Show. They have made two recordings to date, The Greater Cleveland Choral Chapter Live and Chapter Two.
