The Fifteenth Annual Euclid High Schools Dinner andInduction Ceremony ALL H Thursday, October 11, 2001 The Manor Party Center Euclid, Ohio BriefHistory ofEuclid High Schools In 1868, the first high school was organized in Euclid Township. Classes wereheld in a School Streetbuilding. There were six students in the class, withthe teacheralso acting as principal and superintendent. The firsthigh school building was built onNorth Street in 1894. Forty-five were enrolled in the school. The first commencement was held on May28, 1897, with six graduatesreceiving diplomas. (There were six graduates ... and elevenmen on the Board ofEducation.) Thatyear there were 1,439 cases oftardiness reported and 87 cases ofwhipping, including five girls. Central and Shore Schools were built in 1913. Of36 who bid on the job, the lowestbidderreceived $85,000 for the construction ofboth schools. Thus was bom ahealthyrivalry thatcontinuedto excite people all overtown formanyyears. The rivalry was a challenge to each school. At the time, only a fewrooms were occupiedbyhigh school classes. Although classes were mixed at Shore High, theboys hadto use the Bliss Road (East 222nd Street) entrance, while the girls were obliged to enter fromBabbittRoad. A wholenew era ofhigh school environment startedwith the building ofa single Euclidhigh school in 1949. Euclid SeniorHigh School opened with an enrollment of 1,850 in grades 10 through 12. Anewhistory of Euclidpublic high school experience was born. Peakenrollment in the top three grades was reachedbetween 1965-75 when almost 3,000 students were enrolled. Euclidhigh schools have contributedto local, national and international offerings inmusic, art, sports and in the areas ofscience, business, politics and education, as well as in general entries into the work force ofAmerica. c Welcom& We welcome youto theFifteenthAnnualBanquetandInductionCeremonyof theEuclidHighSchools Sports Hall ofFame.
