We designed our textbook to help the new gradu- ate make the transition to professional nursing practice. This textbook focuses on the staff nurse as a vital member of the healthcare team and manager of patient care. As a manager of care, the staff nurse must have the knowledge and skills necessary to make decisions on setting priorities, delegation, quality improve- ment, legal parameters of nursing practice, and ethical issues confronting nursing today. Based on input from students, faculty, and reviewers, we enhanced the topic of delegation and included these issues as a separate chapter. We updated the chapter on workplace issues and included the most recent information on and rel- evant examples of latex allergies, needlestick injuries, and back injuries. This book also provides comprehensive, practical information on developing a nursing career. Workplace issues such as change, conflict management, safety, stress, burnout, and cultural diversity are addressed in an easy-to-understand style. It is our hope that this textbook will assist new graduates in developing their professional roles in the ever-changing healthcare environment We would like to thank the people at F. A. Davis and Innovation Publication Services for their assistance and all the reviewers for their helpful suggestions. Ruth Tappen Sally A. Weiss Diane K.
