FOREWORD ONE OF THE characteristic marks of the thought of today is its interest in anthropology. The beliefs of ‘primitive man’ are no longer dismissed with contempt or derision, but are carefully col- lected, sifted, and examined. One of the results of this study has been to show that the word ‘primitive’ is quite inadequate, for many of the beliefs in question have been and are common among all men, even the most ‘civilized’. It is no longer assumed that ‘there is nothing in them’, and there is no denying their deep and wide- spread influence in human life everywhere. One of the chief of these beliefs is the belief in ‘spirits’, embodied or disembodied or unembodied. In particular, this belief, in various forms, pervades the Bible. It is remarkable that the subject of Biblical beliefs in this realm has had to wait so long for something more than incidental and sporadic treatment. There was need that the material for its adequate study should be collected and arranged. In several books Dr. Edward Langton has set himself the formidable task of dealing with the subjects of angelology and demonology in Hebrew and Christian history. In this volume he has undertaken the presentation of the Biblical phenomena, not in artificial isolation, but in their historical context. He seems to me to have succeeded so well that no one else will need for a long time to attempt the same arduous task. Students of the subject will find their material ready to hand in ‘Langton’. C.
