I
n the Essentials of Behavioral Science series, our goal is to provide readers with
books that will deliver key practical information in an effi cient, accessible
style. The series features books on a variety of topics, such as statistics,
psychological testing, and research design and methodology, to name just
a few. For the experienced professional, books in the series offer a concise
yet thorough review of a specifi c area of expertise, including numerous tips
for best practices. Students can turn to series books for a clear and concise
overview of the important topics with which they must become profi cient to
practice skillfully, effi ciently, and ethically in their chosen fi elds.
Wherever feasible, visual cues highlighting key points are utilized along-

Essentials of Abnormal Psychology concentrates on the most common types
of psychopathologies and examines the various subtypes within each DSM-
IV- TR diagnostic category (the author presumes rudimentary understanding
of the DSM- IV- TR classifi cation system). In addition, etiologies and poten-
tial treatment modalities are explored, including psychopharmacological
modalities that were current at the time of publication. This book will not be
as extensive or as exhaustive as a traditional abnormal psychology text, and it
was not written as such. Therefore, this book does not concentrate on child
